90 seconds with…Megan Loughran

We caught up with cosmetic dentist Megan Loughran to find out what she gets up to in her spare time, her predictions for the future of dentistry and how she got into the profession.

Please introduce yourself.

Hi, my name’s Megan and I’m a cosmetic dentist in Hillsborough in County Down.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

During the week I just love regime.

I go to work, go to the gym, watch something on Netflix. And that’s about the height of it.

And then at weekends, I love hanging out with my friends, catching up with family, going out for nice food.

Whenever I have time off work, I love going on holiday. I like seeing a bit of the world, tasting different food in different places and experiencing all different cultures.

Why did you choose to get into dentistry?

I actually wanted to be a solicitor when I was younger, but I wasn’t very good at reading and science was more my strong point.

So my teachers pushed me to do work experience in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy.

And then I just liked dentistry really because the nurses and dentists were so funny. They had really good relationships with all the patients, so I just loved that vibe and that’s why I decided to do it.

Thank God because I love it!

What has been your strangest experience in dentistry?

I just find the whole social media thing mad. I can’t believe Instagram and social media is such a part of dentistry now.

I would have never imagined that so I find it really bizarre.

How do you think dentistry will change in the future?

Digital. Digital dentistry is the future.

But I think it’s really exciting because it’s more predictable, we’re getting better results and it’s pushing everyone forward.

And it’s the future so we might as well go with it.

What are your dreams and ambitions for the future?

I’m a big dreamer. I’m dreaming big.

I want to be the best cosmetic dentist. I might never get there but that’s what I’m aiming for.

So, I’m just going to keep learning and improving my skills and hopefully loads and loads of smile makeovers in the future.
