On Saturday 29 June, the South West Dentistry Show is touching down at Aston Gate Stadium in Bristol.
The completely free event is a must-attend one-day show designed for dentists, dental staff, and technicians from Bristol and surrounding areas.

Here’s a closer look at what’s in store at the CPD Theatre,
Jo-Anne Taylor – Dentolegal considerations when providing aesthetic and cosmetic treatment
Originally from Lancashire, Jo qualified in Leeds in 1991 and began her career as a restorative house officer, then a maxillofacial senior house officer. She then moved to NHS general practice, completing foundation training and working as an associate. Jo has also spent time working in community dental services and dental access centres.
After working in Australia and the Channel Islands, Jo settled in Hampshire where she was employed as clinical teaching fellow, course lead and associate head for the University of Portsmouth.
Jo remains involved in the quality assurance of dental education through her work as an education associate with the General Dental Council (GDC). Since 2020, Jo has worked with the Dental Defence Union (DDU), initially as a dental telephone adviser and currently as a dentolegal adviser providing advice and assistance to members.
At the South West Dentistry Show, Jo’s lecture plans to highlight some of the challenges that dental professionals can face when providing aesthetic and cosmetic treatments and highlight ways that these challenges can be overcome.

Preetee Hylton – Safeguarding: an essential in dentistry
Preetee Hylton is the president-elect of the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN). She is a full-time practising dental nurse and safeguarding lead at the No8 Partnership Dental Practice. She is also a dental nursing and oral health education tutor at the Dental Nursing Academy, as well as an associate examiner with the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).
Preetee is a relentless advocate for domestic abuse and suicide prevention awareness because of her lived experience.
On her lecture, Preetee said: ‘All team members of a dental organisation are responsible for the safeguarding of patients and their colleagues.
‘The most effective way to ensure children, young people and vulnerable adults are kept safe is for dental professionals’ to educate themselves to recognise signs of various types of abuse and be confident in raising concern, should the need arise.
‘It is essential for all dental practices to have a safeguarding policy and to carry out regular safeguarding training for all members of staff.’

Dr Philip Lewis – The early detection of mouth cancer – an initiative for the whole dental team
Philip was one of the pioneers to work to raise awareness of the importance of the early detection of mouth cancer. He continues to be heavily involved with the subject. Philip has served as an ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation since 2013, becoming president of the charity between 2020 and 2023.
He continues to be passionate about raising professional and public awareness of the subject and promoting self-examination; especially important in times when access to dental appointments has become increasingly limited. Philip writes extensively for the dental press on a range of subjects and lectures to both the public and professionals. In addition, he continues to run a single-handed dental practice on the Isle of Wight and remains active in several dental societies and committees.
Outside of dentistry, Philip takes an interest in music, drama and travel.
On his lecture, Philip said: ‘The legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions in the availability of dental appointments continues to be detrimental to oral health.
‘Early detection of mouth cancer is being delayed. The incidence of the disease is rising.
‘This presentation is aimed at showing the importance of every dental team member in maximising efficiency in our efforts to ensure timely diagnosis. In addition, it stresses the importance of self-examination among the wider population.’
