90 seconds with…Preetee Hylton

We speak to Preetee Hylton about how she entered the dentistry profession, where she sees it going in the future, and her weirdest experience as a dental nurse.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Preetee Hylton, I am a dental nurse and a safeguarding lead at the No8 Partnership dental practice in Chelsea, London.

I am also a dental nurse tutor at the dental nursing academy as well as an associate examiner with the NBDEN.

What do you do in your spare time?

Outside of dentistry, I very much enjoy reading sci-fi and fantasy books, and I am currently obsessed with taking very good care of my garden.

Why did you choose to get into dentistry?

I actually fell into dentistry, but I am happy to say that I have fallen in love with the profession. The current goal is to provide high quality care to our patients to make sure they are happy at all times.

What’s been your strangest experience in dentistry?

My strangest experience in dentistry was years ago when a patient approached me in a local park when I was on a date and wanted me to book an appointment for them there and then. Days later, they came into the practice, they were very abusive and threatened to hurt me when I finished my shift.

Fortunately, nothing like that ever happened but it was quite an interesting experience.

How do you think dentistry will change in the future?

Dentistry is forever evolving and we have been more focused on the digital side of things. But when it comes to dental nursing, I am looking forward to dental nurses having much more recognition and respect in the workplace.

What are your dreams/ambitions for the future?

I am working hard towards implementing a domestic abuse policy for staff members in dentistry, and I am hoping to complete my oral health education certification by next year.
