The treatment coordinator (TCO) role can seem very isolated as often most dental practices only have one team member with this title.

As a dental nurse for 23 years, I felt very much part of the team. However, during the last six years as a TCO I occasionally felt quite different about this. What I soon realised was that, without the help of the team, my job would be much more difficult.

We know treatment coordinators play a vital role in ensuring efficient and effective dental treatment processes. However, their success is heavily reliant on the support and collaboration of the entire dental team. The collective efforts and seamless coordination among dental professionals are essential to provide exceptional patient care, streamline clinical procedures, and enhance overall patient satisfaction.

Let’s take a look at why the support of the full dental team is crucial for TCOs and the benefits it brings to the dental practice.

1. Facilitating efficient treatment planning

TCOs rely on accurate and detailed treatment plans to effectively communicate and coordinate patients’ dental treatments.

The support of the full dental team, including dentists, dental hygienists, and dental nurses, is vital in developing comprehensive treatment plans. These team members provide valuable insights and recommendations based on their specific expertise, improving the accuracy and efficiency of the planning process.

2. Seamless communication and coordination

High-quality dental treatment requires seamless communication and coordination among the dental team members.

TCOs act as the central point of contact, ensuring all team members are well-informed about patients’ treatment needs, progress, and desired outcomes. Without the support of the full dental team, important information may be lost, leading to delays, errors, and frustration for both the team and the patient.

3. Patient education and engagement

TCOs play a significant role in educating patients about their treatment options, procedures, and oral health maintenance. However, to effectively carry out this task, they need to rely on accurate and up-to-date information from the dental team.

Dentists, dental hygienists, and dental nurses can provide crucial insights into specific treatment procedures, potential complications, and aftercare instructions, enabling TCOs to confidently guide patients through their treatment journey.

4. Addressing patient concerns and anxiety

Dental anxiety is a common issue that can significantly impact patients’ willingness to pursue necessary dental treatment. TCOs can help alleviate these concerns by ensuring open lines of communication between patients and the dental team.

Collaborative support from the full dental team allows TCOs to address potential fears or anxieties sensitively and effectively, leading to enhanced patient comfort and satisfaction.

5. Enhancing the patient experience

A positive patient experience not only leads to higher patient satisfaction, but also fosters patient loyalty and referrals.

By working closely with the dental team, TCOs can ensure a smooth and seamless patient journey, from scheduling appointments and managing insurance concerns to providing post-treatment guidance. This collaborative approach creates a patient-centric environment, leaving patients feeling valued and well-cared for.

Support and collaboration

The success of TCOs heavily relies on the support and collaboration of the full dental team. By leveraging the expertise and input of dentists, dental hygienists, and dental nurses, TCOs can efficiently plan treatments, facilitate effective communication, educate patients, address concerns, and enhance the overall patient experience.

The collective efforts of the dental team significantly contribute to the success of TCOs and the ultimate goal of providing exceptional patient care.

So, although the TCO role can sometimes seem like lone working, it very much involves the whole team to be successful.
