We spoke to Dr Alaa Ati about why she chose to get into dentistry, her ambitions of the future and her passion for astronomy.
Please introduce yourself
My name is Dr Alaa Ati and I’m a dentist based in London with a special interest in periodontology and dental aesthetics.
I also run my own facial aesthetics skin clinic from Harley Street London.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time I love being surrounded by nature and going on my daily walk which is what I’m just about to do now.
I also have a huge passion for astronomy and I absolutely love star gazing and catching some planets if I’m lucky.
Why did you choose to get into dentistry?
I chose dentistry because I love the way it can truly be life-changing for so many people.
Sometimes things as simple as oral hygiene education, gum treatment or a filling that you can do there and then can completely change someone’s life and take them out of pain.
For me, I think that was the winner.
What’s been your strangest experience in dentistry
The strangest experience I’ve had in dentistry is having someone come in thinking they’ve lost a filling and placing it on the dental tray in my surgery.
After close inspection, it was, in fact, a piece of crispy bread.
What are your dreams/ambitions for the future?
My ambitions for the future would be, of course, to keep growing as a clinician and as a person so I can always offer my patients the best.
It would also be to give back to the community by continuing to do, and hopefully expand, the school visits that I do. And also mentoring for younger dentists. This is because I really want to be the person that I wish I had when I had just graduated.
