The benefits of a rejuvenating retreat

Rhona Eskander discusses her yearly ritual of escaping to a fasting retreat

This month, Rhona Eskander discusses her yearly ritual of escaping to a fasting sanctuary – could a rejuvenating retreat improve your mental health and wellbeing?

Year after year, I find myself drawn back to the same sanctuary. Buchinger Wilhelmi clinic is my cherished haven where I embark on a transformative ten-day fast. As I step into this serene abode, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of contentment and peace. This place holds a special significance in my life, serving as my happy place. I embark on a journey of fasting, not only for my physical health but also for the profound impact it has on my mental wellbeing.

The power of fasting and mental health

Throughout my numerous visits, I have come to firmly believe in the therapeutic benefits that fasting offers for mental health. As my body takes a break from consuming food, I find my mind gradually transcending into a state of tranquility. The sense of stillness and clarity that ensues allows me to reconnect with my inner self, shedding the burdens of everyday stress and anxiety.

Unlocking the benefits of fasting

Beyond the mental serenity, fasting encompasses a multitude of health benefits that extend to the physical and emotional realms. From a physiological perspective, fasting promotes autophagy – the natural process of cell renewal, leading to cellular repair and rejuvenation. This renewal process can enhance longevity and strengthen the body’s immune system.

Moreover, fasting has the potential to improve metabolic health. This aids weight management and reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart ailments. The fasting state encourages the body to burn stored fat for energy, leading to potential weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity.

On an emotional level, fasting helps cultivate mindfulness and self-discipline. As I refrain from the usual routine of eating, I learn to appreciate the simplicity of life and develop a deeper connection with my body’s needs. This heightened self-awareness often translates to healthier eating habits even beyond the fasting period.

Conclusion

Returning to the retreat each year for fasting has become a profound ritual in my life. It serves as a profound reminder of the power of self-care and introspection. Fasting not only bestows numerous physical benefits but also enriches my mental wellbeing, reinforcing my belief in the profound connection between mind, body, and spirit.

In this fast-paced world, dedicating time to reset and realign with ourselves is a gift. The fasting retreat has bestowed this upon me. It nourishes my soul and rekindles my zest for life. I’m left with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity as I step back into the outside world.
