Young dentists are shaping the future of dental care in the UK from developing new ways of communicating with patients through social media, to quickly getting up-to-speed on the latest treatments.

Dr Lydia Chan, dentist at mydentist Formby, is one of the many early careers clinicians who joined mydentist to further her skillset and tap into the wider clinical network and extensive training resources available.

When discussing her growth both professionally and personally, Lydia said: ‘My practice manager is a champion for development, always encouraging courses and supporting my growth. Learning to use the intraoral scanner with help from a treatment co-ordinator was a game-changer.

Find your passion
Approaching the next step in your career can prove a daunting task, but it can also open up countless doors to finding your passion and allow you the space you need to find a specialty.
Juhi Vir, dentist at mydentist Eastleigh, joined the team in 2019 and since then, has seen a massive increase in her growth of private treatments.
Now looking ahead to her future, Juhi is eager to find her speciality. She said: ‘I would like to specialise in restorative and aesthetic dentistry. Now that the Eastleigh practice has been expanded, we have access to new, exciting technology. It’s definitely the perfect canvas for me to start that postgraduate experience for myself.’
Juhi added: ‘I’ll admit, before I joined mydentist, I did get told by a few people that because it’s such a large corporate you can come across as just another number in the system. I haven’t felt like that. I think they really have valued what I’ve been bringing to this company and not only valued it, but also encouraged me to go further, which is why I’m still here a year, two years on, and looking forward to continuing my future here.’
Exploring avenues
There are countless opportunities at mydentist. Awaz Sharief, dentist at mydentist Padgate, joined the team straight after completing her qualifications, and primarily focused on NHS dentistry to begin with. However, after spending some time in the practice, she decided to explore more avenues.
Awaz was provided with focused support from a mydentist clinical development advisor (CDA), a network of more than 40 experienced dentists who provide coaching and advice to dentists across the country. Awaz credits her CDA with offering her the guidance she needed to work out where she wanted to take her career and how she could achieve her goals.
She said: ‘Freedom means to me that I am supported when it comes to my career goals and being able to talk to my CDA about what my goals were gave me the support, and, in turn, freedom that I needed to progress.’
Awaz added: ‘From the very beginning, I’ve been I’ve been given a lot of support and the career goals that I’ve had have been welcomed with open arms. I see myself being with mydentist for the long haul. Like I said, I started off as a newly qualified dentist.
‘I’ve been given so much support and whenever I’ve needed extra support to be able to get to the next level, they’ve been with me every step of the way.’
