Clyde Munro Dental Group: revolutionising care through digital dentistry

Clyde Munro on digital dentistry

Clyde Munro Dental Group is leading the charge in the digital dentistry revolution – find out more about their use of digital technology.

Digital dentistry has revolutionised the way dental practices operate, and at Clyde Munro Dental Group, we are proud to be at the forefront of this exciting transformation. Since November 2020, we have embarked on a digital project that has significantly enhanced our patient experience. It has also improved the efficiency of our dental services.

One of the key components of our digital initiative is the integration of state-of-the-art scanners across 58 of our practices. We currently have 75 scanners, allowing our clinicians to capture highly detailed 3D models of patients’ teeth and jaws.

This advanced technology has revolutionised treatment planning, particularly for complex procedures such as implant placements, orthodontic treatments, and smile makeovers. With the ability to visualise desired outcomes and simulate different treatment scenarios, our dentists can communicate treatment plans more effectively with patients. This leads to better-informed decisions and higher patient satisfaction.

AI technology in digital dentistry

In conjunction with our digital intraoral scanning capabilities, we currently have six practices using AI (artificial intelligence) technology to aid in the reading and reporting of digital X-rays. This supports our dentists in identifying areas of potential treatment needs and in monitoring areas of interest.

We are now looking to tie in this AI technology with NIRI (near infra-red imaging) technology on Itero scanners. This helps detect pre-carious lesions without the need for exposure to radiation. This could provide an invaluable screening tool to quickly and easily improve caries diagnosis, especially in children and young adults.

Digital dentistry also prioritises patient comfort, and we are committed to providing the most comfortable experience possible. The use of intraoral scanners has eliminated the need for unpleasant impressions, greatly reducing patient discomfort and anxiety. Our patients can now experience a more pleasant and efficient dental visit. This allows them to relax and feel at ease throughout their treatment.

Education and engagement

Education and engagement are vital aspects of our patient-centred approach, and digital tools play a significant role in this regard. By utilising chairside monitors, our dentists can showcase images, X-rays, digital scans, and treatment plans in a compelling manner.

This enhanced patient education enables individuals to have a better understanding of their oral health conditions and treatment options. Informed patients are empowered to make decisions that align with their goals, resulting in improved treatment outcomes and overall satisfaction.

Callum Graham, head of clinical and digital dentistry, states: ‘The future of dentistry in the UK is digital. As we saw with mobile phones 10 years ago, the level of development, innovation and investment in new equipment, technologies and treatment options is staggering, as well as exciting.

‘At Clyde Munro, we a very proud of our commitment to the future and are technologically unrivalled in the Scottish dental market. This commitment not only allows us to be at the cutting edge of clinical dentistry but also to help develop and shape emerging technologies.’

Digital centres of excellence

At Clyde Munro Dental Group, we have established 13 digital centres of excellence (COE), where our staff members have received comprehensive training on the use of digital scanners and other cutting-edge technologies. These sites serve as model practices, showcasing the full potential of digital dentistry. As part of this initiative, we have also refurbished these sites, creating a modern and welcoming environment for both our patients and our staff.

We understand that our success in digital dentistry relies on the expertise and dedication of our team. To date, we have trained 112 patient care coordinators (PCCs), who play a crucial role in guiding our patients through their digital dental journey.

Currently, 26 of our practices are equipped with digital tools and have PCCs in place. This setup ensures a smooth and efficient patient experience. We currently have 34 PCCs either in their main role or acting as second PCCs. This reflects our ongoing efforts to enhance our digital capabilities and offer top-notch support to our patients.
