GDC calls for DCPs to meet CPD deadline

With more than 2,000 yet to do so, the General Dental Council (GDC) has called for dental care professionals (DCPs) to make their CPD statement ahead of the deadline.

With more than 2,000 yet to do so, the General Dental Council (GDC) has called for dental care professionals (DCPs) to make their CPD statement ahead of the deadline.

The regulator has said that 2,000 dental care professionals still need to make their annual CPD declaration. As well as this, an additional 1,500 have made a statement, but have not yet met their CPD requirements.

With the deadline for submitting the required annual CPD statement only four days away (28 August), the GDC has called for DCPs to check that they are compliant.

DCPs are required to complete at least 10 hours of CPD over each two-year period. Even if a DCP has not completed any CPD activity in 2022-2023, they are still need to make a statement.

Not completing a CPD declaration can have ‘serious consequences for individuals and the team they work in’, and non-compliance can result in removal from the register, the GDC has said.

As a result, the regulator is calling on DCPs to make sure their CPD statements are in order ‘before it’s too late’.

GDC frustration

This comes after a dental technician was erased from the GDC register for falling short on his CPD requirements after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Simon Barrington was diagnosed two years ago while working as a dental technician. He had to undergo significant neurosurgery to remove the tumour, leaving him unable to speak in the immediate aftermath.

During this period, CPD requirements changed. According to Simon, he was unaware of this change and did not manage to meet the requirement within that year. This resulted in his removal from the GDC register.

Other dental technicians have also reported a similar frustration with the ‘black and white rules’ of the regulator.

Barrington’s erasure sparked criticism throughout the dental profession, with many appalled by how the GDC handled the case.
