Ken Finlayson, chairman of FMC (owner of Dentistry and dentistry.co.uk), has successfully walked the Camino for charity in memory of his son, arriving at Santiago de Compostela today.
Ken’s journey saw him hike in tribute to his son, James, who died last August aged only 25.
‘James was very, very special to me and my family and to the many people that knew him,’ he says.
The trek also raised money for Dentaid. The charity provides dental care to those who struggle to access it across the UK.
Ken Finlayson is pictured outside of Santiago de Compostela cathedral this morning. The cathedral has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, with the Camino remaining an infamously arduous trek to this day.
‘I am delighted to report that we reached our destination, and I lit a candle in memory of James this morning, Thursday 27 July, at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela,’ says Ken. ‘Thanks so much to all those who have supported this journey. The level of fundraising has been amazing.’
Fundraising
Ken has raised more than £55,000 to date through his Camino walk, exceeding his £50,000 target. This money will go towards providing free dental screening, advice and treatment to anyone who cannot access it elsewhere. In particular, it will fund a new mobile clinic which will bring dental care to thousands across the country.
Though an outstanding amount of money has been raised, there is always more that can be done. As Ken stresses: ‘It’s still not too late if you haven’t had a chance to donate. Just visit the link. Anything you can contribute, however big or small, would be greatly appreciated.’
