FAQs – how to communicate the move to your team and patients

Practice Plan explains the process of communicating your transition from NHS to private to your practice team and patients.

‘Communication works for those who work at it.’ – John Powell.

If you’re handing back your NHS contract and moving into private practice, communicating this is vitally important. At Practice Plan, we’ve been helping dentists to convert to private practice since 1995. So, we know a thing or two about how to communicate this change. We like to think we’re experts at it!

In this short video, three of our regional support managers (RSMs) offer some guidance on communicating your move away from the NHS to independent dentistry. As Donna explains, we can advise you on the best way to go about informing and signing up your patients, whether that’s through a mailshot, or face-to-face.

She also addresses a concern many converting dentists have about losing patients. Amongst your existing NHS patients, there will be some who can’t or won’t sign up to become private patients. However, as she says, if you are to achieve a slower pace and spend more time with your patients, then you will need to have fewer of them, anyway.

Communicating your motives

Nobody likes change, which means some of your existing patients may not be happy about your conversion. However, as Sarah says, it’s important to be clear about your motives for making that change. That way, you can develop a simple, clear message you and your team can convey to patients. In the end, it’s about ensuring their care and oral health.

Josie advises the key to a successful conversion is to get your team involved. Gain their commitment by sharing your plans and vision from the start and asking for their ideas and suggestions. A happy team is more likely to support you during the transition.

Sound advice.

We have helped 100s of dentists, and their teams, to reignite their passion and fall back in love with dentistry – resulting in a calmer and happier environment for dental practices and their patients.
