Dentistry Scotland Show – all you need to know about Lecture Theatre Two

The 2023 Dentistry Scotland Show is back in Edinburgh this June – find out what you can see in Lecture Theatre Two.

Have you registered for this year’s Dentistry Scotland Show?

This year it’s taking place at the Edinburgh International Convention Centre on Saturday 3 June.

This year’s show has more lecture theatres than ever before, with speakers set to discuss carefully selected topics covering a range of areas.

And best of all, each lecture is CPD-certified, meaning attendees can go home with hours of CPD. All you have to do is scan on the day, and the CPD certificates will be available in your Dentistry Club account.

‘We’re always so excited to bring the Dentistry Scotland Show to Edinburgh!’ said Laurie Glover, FMC’s marketing director. ‘It’s an absolute highlight of our year thanks to the incredible welcome the Scottish dental community offer us.

‘We’re back this year with a slate of home-grown talent in our lecture theatres and we’re covering the topics that will shape the future of dentistry in Scotland.

‘There’s more CPD than ever before and we’ve lined up several speakers to deliver the GDC’s recommended topics to help you get those hours completed.’

Iain Chapple – WTF: What is the future? A brave new world driving behaviour change in oral healthcare teams (one hour) – sponsored by Listerine

Iain Chapple is director of research for the Institute of Clinical Sciences and former head of the dental school (2016-2020) at Birmingham University UK. He has also written 13-textbooks and 35-chapters.

This presentation will look at the role of personalised dental medicine in 21st century dental practice.

It will start by looking at the size of the challenge presented by periodontal diseases, and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2022/23 oral health strategy and move onto discuss how there is a need to put the patient at the centre of all we do.

The session will then put a lens on gingivitis as a new paradigm and explain why there is a need to take it seriously in the context of primary prevention of periodontitis, but also its impact on systemic diseases.

The lecture will finish by looking at multi-disciplinary team working between oral healthcare professionals and medical colleagues, why that is important and how we can make it work in a bi-directional manner.

Benjamin Tighe – WTF: What is the future? And where do I start? (one hour) – sponsored by Listerine

Benjamin Tighe is a tutor dental therapist at the prestigious Eastman Dental Hospital alongside working in private practice.

He is a trainer for the Swiss Dental Academy and lectures across the UK on Guided Biofilm Therapy. He also has specific clinical interests in the treatment of peri-implant disease and the systemic effects of oral biofilm on the body.

His lecture will provide an overview of the role of chemotherapeutics in biofilm prevention reviewing the latest mouth rinse evidence, why it’s important for dental hygienists and therapists to review and critique research and how we can implement the results in our daily practice.

By the end of the lecture, he hopes attendees will be able to:

  • Develop research critique skills
  • Understand the latest research on chemotherapeutic mouth rinses
  • Understand how research informs S3 guidelines.

Laura Bailey – WTF: What is the future? Know your patient, change the outcome (one hour) – sponsored by Listerine

Laura Bailey graduated with a first class bachelor of science degree (BSc) as a dental therapist from Manchester University in 2013. Since then, she has been working in private practice for 10 years in Richmond.

She is a progressive therapist keen to develop her full scope of practice and has recently graduated with distinction from a postgraduate diploma in restorative and aesthetic dentistry.

On her lecture, Laura said: ‘We all have patients where achieving a great oral hygiene outcome is challenging. Patients often don’t seem to listen or appear to care.

‘Inspiring behaviour change in patients can be challenging and frustrating, but if we are to achieve the best oral health outcome for them, we must persist in our efforts.

‘I want to unpick the human brain by looking at the four personality types and how to adapt your approach to each one. I will arm you with three questions you can ask every patient to establish their type and find out what makes them tick.

‘Get excited to know your patient better than ever and change their oral and systemic health outcome!’

Mani Bhardwaj – Dentistry: the clinical business (30 minutes)

He hopes attendees will take away from his lecture:

  • Dental business challenges

  • Associates impact in dental business
  • A better understanding of dentistry as a business
  • Knowledge on their role in the business
  • An understanding of what makes this business successful.
