National Smile Month – everyone deserves a healthy smile – and Biomin F helps ensure they can have it!

National Smile MonthIt’s the Oral Health Foundation’s National Smile Month (16 May-16 June) and the theme is ‘everyone deserves a healthy smile’.

The aim is to shine a light on inequalities within oral health. The Oral Health Foundation claims that your age, level of education and where you live all play a part in determining how healthy – or unhealthy – your mouth might be.

Oral health inequalities can lead to greater risk of:

  • Oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease
  • Tooth loss and tooth extractions
  • Mouth cancer
  • Dental phobias and anxiety
  • Less access to dental care and support services.

Effective oral health

Over five weeks the campaign will focus on different aspects of dental health inequality. The aim is to help tackle a number of key issues, and support people to achieve a healthier life through better oral health.

According to the Oral Health Foundation, 25% of adults don’t clean their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and 31% have tooth decay.

Children’s oral health is even more worrying. Figures from Public Health England in 2020 showed that 23% of five-year-olds had tooth decay. This figure was much higher among children from deprived areas (34%) than from better off areas (14%). Dental health inequality is real – and it’s not getting any better.

The very first step to improving oral health is through good oral hygiene, and regular brushing with Biomin F toothpaste is a great way to keep your mouth as healthy as possible.

Fluoride, whether in toothpaste or in the water supply, has been proven to improve rates of dental decay dramatically. The unique formulation of Biomin F means that it delivers a low, controlled dose of fluoride exactly where it’s needed over several hours.

Trials show this is the most effective way to deliver the protection.

How Biomin works

Biomin F is based on a new generation of bioactive materials, designed to mimic the body’s own mechanisms to restore lost or damaged tooth mineral.

When you brush with Biomin F, the tiny particles adhere to the surface of the tooth and enter the dentinal tubules. Here they dissolve slowly over several hours to release calcium, fluoride and phosphate ions in an ideal ratio to deposit fluorapatite (FAP), so remineralising the tooth enamel.

Fluorapatite closely resembles natural tooth mineral, and acts to replenish damaged tooth enamel. This prevents the enamel from weakening and becoming soft, which is the first stage of tooth decay (caries).

It is also durable and more acid-resistant than hydroxyapatite, produced by previous generations of bioactive toothpaste.

What’s more, Biomin F has a ‘smart’ effect. In the presence of acid in the mouth, for example after you eat something sweet or drink an acidic or fizzy drink, Biomin F gets to work more quickly, dissolving and releasing the compounds that will restore the pH balance in the mouth and start to produce protective fluorapatite.

As well as replenishing lost tooth enamel, Biomin F toothpaste reduces the symptoms of dentine hypersensitivity. This is a particular problem where erosion has occurred on the tooth surface, or where gum disease has caused recession and exposed dentine.

Trials around the world have shown that regular brushing with Biomin F can reduce or even completely eliminate sensitivity.

Biomin F has undergone extensive scrutiny as a medical device, giving it a CE mark that is recognised across Europe as evidence that the toothpaste lives up to its claims.

It also has FDA 510K approval in the United States and approval by the Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration).

Finally, it was the first toothpaste to receive the highly respected Oral Health Foundation accreditation. This is further proof that it has been externally validated and shown to be effective.

The Oral Health Foundation states: ‘Despite the many improvements in oral health over the last 40 years, inequalities continue to be a burden for countless individuals.

‘We believe that everybody deserves a healthy smile. A person’s oral health is a crucial part of their overall wellbeing.

‘Our activities and programmes, including National Smile Month, help some of the most vulnerable members of society. These can make a real difference to a person’s oral health.

‘Supporting healthier lives through better oral health reflects everything that we do.’

Alec Hilton, CEO of Biomin Technologies Ltd commented: ‘We are delighted to support National Smile Month.

‘Raising awareness is key to tackling the problems of dental health inequality. Regular toothbrushing with Biomin F can play an important part in achieving the Foundation’s goals.’
