Missed out on this week’s dental news? No problem, here’s what happened over the past seven days…

‘Completely unacceptable’ – dentist ‘physically assaulted’ in dental practice

A dentist was physically assaulted while working in his dental practice, it has been revealed

dentist has been ‘physically assaulted’ whilst working at his dental practice, a Humberside Police report confirms. Minister Jo Churchill has described the assault as ‘completely unacceptable’. While deputy CDO, Jason Wong, says the dental team should practice ‘without fear for our safety’. This is a horrendous attack on people who are trying to help their patients. After the story of a patient planning to torture a dentist after stalking him for years, this again highlights how little is being done to protect dental staff, while litigation against dentists remains excessively high to help protect patients.

The BDJ has come under fire this week after it described Linda Wallace as bridging the gap between two male equivalents who held the same position. The ‘shoulder shrug’ response was just as shocking. Stephen Hancocks, editor-in-chief of the BDJ said: ‘The BDJ always welcomes comment and debate. We will be covering developments in our future issues.’

Calls for answers over future of dental students in Scotland

BDA Scotland is increasing pressure on the Scottish government to establish whether dental students will graduate in 2021. It warns of excessive debts for students who have to undertake an additional year of study, as well as possible patient access problems if dentists don’t graduate. The current generation of graduates will live with the burden of COVID-19 in many ways for years to come. To add an additional unnecessary financial strain is just unfair.
