Oral care brand Pärla has launched a round of crowdfunding – we heard from Pärla’s founders and an investor on the brand’s purpose and the benefits of investing.
Rhona Eskander – Pärla’s story
Pärla oral care was founded by three dentists that were passionate about making change. We often got approached by companies that wanted us to promote their products. Being young and impressionable, we didn’t really think twice. But when we delved deeper, we recognised that so many products were having a huge impact on the environment. For example, it takes 500 years for a single toothpaste tube to decompose.
So we began our market research as three friends and recognised that we could have a huge impact on the dental industry by providing ingredient-led products that were not only good for you, but were also good for the planet.
Pärla oral care can be found in major retailers. We even were scouted to be on Dragon’s Den, and now we have over 4,000 subscribers. What I found amazing is that so many people want to be part of this movement, and I think it’s a huge opportunity now for dentists to be part of this and to be behind us.
We are designed by dentists, and we want dentists to be involved all the way. So we are proud to now be on a fundraising platform. We’re giving people an investment opportunity. So if you want to be behind something amazing and remarkable, then please find out more. You can contact us or have a look at any of the links available to you, and be part of something that will have a huge impact and change to our future.
Simon Chard – why Pärla was founded
Did you know that every tube of toothpaste you’ve ever used still exists somewhere on the planet? It’s made of plastic, which takes up to 500 years to decompose, and over 20 billion of those tubes are going into landfill or the ocean every year.
Obviously, plastic is making its way into our ecosystem, into our bloodstreams, into our bodies, into the bodies of our children. It’s wrecking our oceans, and it’s also having a negative impact on our health across the planet.
Myself and my fellow dental co-founders wanted to do something different to make a positive impact in the dental industry – that’s why we created Pärla.
There’s zero plastic across Pärla’s whole packaging line. Our focus with our ingredients is to be at the forefront of modern oral health, utilising the only the finest quality, ethically-sourced ingredients and removing all the ingredients that you don’t need like sodium lauryl sulfate, artificial preservatives and artificial colorants.
We are the leading B Corp certified oral care brand now across UK grocery. Also, we have the only oral probiotic based oral care product in that space. We are really looking to make a no green washing, no gimmicks impact on the oral care space in a way that has never been done before. Our products are designed by dentists for patients, for the better of the planet, for the better of people. And that’s really why we created Pärla.
Ads Thanki – the tax benefits of investing
So the UK Enterprise Investment Scheme, or EIS for short, is a qualifying scheme that the government has produced to allow growth in early stage businesses, and that offers significant tax advantages for investors.
So firstly, Income Tax relief. You get 30% tax relief on your investment. So for example, if you invested £10,000 in Pärla today, you could reduce your income tax by £3,000.
Secondly, capital gains tax (CGT) exemption. Any gains from selling EIS shares, after a minimum holding period of three years, are completely exempt from CGT. The growth that you could potentially realise is unbelievable.
There’s CGT deferral as well. If you realise a capital gain elsewhere – such as selling your dental practice – you can defer paying CGT by reinvesting those gains into an EIS company. The deferral will last as long as the EIS investment is held, and then can be transferred if the shares are sold.
Now, loss relief. If the investment fails, if Pärla completely falls flat on its face, investors can claim loss relief against the income tax. This reduces the risk completely by offsetting the net loss against the taxable incomeF or example, for a £10,000 investment that fails in an EIS, the loss of 30% after 30% can be further offset. So again, it is risk free.
Finally, inheritance tax (IHT) relief. All EIS shares qualify for 100% IHT relief after being held for two years. So should certainly be considered as part of sort of estate planning and going forward. So there you have it, invest in Pärla.
Sam Patel – why I invested
Really, what we’ve got in Pärla is a product that is hopefully going to revolutionise the market. It is dentists recommending this product and that hasn’t been done before. Primarily, it’s a better product than what’s on the market and it’s definitely better for the environment. That is why I’ve decided to invest in Pärla.
