Surina Sehgal, aka The Foodie Dentist, spills the beans on nutrition and oral health, and juggling being an Instagram influencer and full-time dentist.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a dentist currently practising in the UK. I graduated a few years ago.
Just over a year ago, I started my blog – The Foodie Dentist – as a passion project to inspire and educate my patients on the power of nutrition for our oral health.
Actually, one of my patients inspired me to start the blog! She tried some of my recipes and encouraged me to post them online – I’m very grateful to her for that!
When did you know you wanted to be a dentist?
I wish I could say that I dreamt of being a dentist from childhood, but it just wasn’t the case!
I went into dentistry because science was my favourite subject at school and I always liked the idea of being in a job where communicating with people was key.
Dental school was really hard. There were times when the workload was pretty overwhelming!
It was only when I finished dental school and got into practice that I really fell in love with dentistry.
Meeting new patients, developing that relationship and helping them feel better about themselves through their smile, is something really special.
What would you have been if not a dentist?
I loved sciences, so definitely something in that field.
Before dentistry, I was even considering applying for neuroscience, as the brain is just something that truly fascinated me!
But dentistry is, for sure, the right fit for me.
