Alison Large – Managing patient expectations

Alison Large graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 1999. After this she worked in general practice for over 10 years, initially in the north east of England before relocating to Oxfordshire.

She gained an MFGDP diploma in 2007, has been a vocational trainer and has also provided mentoring.

In addition, Alison joined the DDU in 2008 and currently works as a full-time Dentolegal adviser.

On her lecture, she commented: ‘While the circumstances surrounding the care of individual patients will vary enormously, one common theme faced by dental professionals, in aiming to achieve satisfactory outcomes is the need to try to manage expectations.

‘Good communication and a team-based approach are key components of this fundamental aspect of a patient’s experience.

‘This presentation will focus on the importance of everyone delivering a clear and consistent message when attempting to manage patient expectations.

Alison hoped delegates take away from her lecture:

  • A better understanding of the importance of managing patients’ expectations
  • An appreciation of how the information provided to patients may influence their expectations
  • An acknowledgement of the role of the dental team in accurate and consistent messaging to better manage patients’ expectations.
