SDCEP to publish research into prevention of periodontal diseases

SDCEP to publish research into prevention of periodontal diseasesThe Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) is soon to publish research into the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases in primary care.

This organisation is part of NHS Scotland and has been working on guidance for dental teams for a while.

The last published guidance was in 2014 and strictly speaking, reviews of guidance should be published every five years, but as we know, the last two years have been challenging.

The SDCEP Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Diseases in Primary Care guidance was first published in 2014.

In line with SDCEP’s standard five-year guidance review period, the scheduled review of the guidance topic commenced in 2019.

The review process was paused in 2020 while SDCEP responded to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This work then restarted in 2021. It will focus on aligning with Public Health England’s Delivering Better Oral Health toolkit and guidance from the British Society of Periodontology.

A multidisciplinary Guidance Development Group (GDG) comprising members from a range of dental specialities and patient representatives has been convened to review and update the guidance, with assistance from the Programme Development Team.

As a result, online meetings are taking place.

Scoping research has been carried out to inform the update of the guidance. Information about current practice and also attitudes to periodontal care was gathered by researchers working in the Triads programme via practitioner surveys in 2020 and 2021.

It is anticipated that the updated guidance will be published in the latter part of 2022.
