A beautiful monster

Why did you choose to go on The Island? There were a couple of things that happened in 2013. The first was that the business of which I was a director and one of the co-founders, collapsed. So I found myself in a really interesting situation. The good news is that the new business we’ve…

Your opinions on GDC reform

So the problem with the GDC is… Well we all have our views, but are they heard? And were they heard in the recent online questionnaire sent to us all? It seems to me that it was a done deal, this planned rise in the annual retention fee. Now that really needs to be renamed,…

Your opinions on GDC reform

The 2012 Office of Fair Trading report into dentistry found the lack of information was an urgent problem for patients and in 2014 many patients still don’t know what their options are when something goes wrong. That advert in the Daily Telegraph was about reaching out and telling patients that the Government, via the GDC (General Dental…

The decline and fall of UK dentistry: a political tragedy

I know I’m an old reactionary, but most would agree the standard of our dental services is on the slide. There’s every indication that a series of poor political decisions at state level are to blame. A lack of real vision Ministerial agendas are always constrained by time. A new health minister will want to…

Your opinions on GDC reform

This won’t be the first time that I have used these words in regard to the General Dental Council (GDC) (and sadly, I suspect that it won’t be the last). As a dental professional you would have had to have been living in a cave for the last month or so to have missed the…

NHS friends and family test

Dentists who have an NHS contract will have had a letter from Barry Cockcroft in his capacity as chief dental officer (CDO) for NHS England. It introduces the ‘NHS friends and family test’ – a new one on me and I suspect many dentists working in the service. The powers that be intend to make…

Reform demands a section 60 order to change of the Dentists Act 1984. Only this will wrestle back control of fitness to practise…
