Flossing once a week linked to lower risk of stroke

Flossing your teeth at least once a week can lower the risk of stroke, according to a new study.

The study asked 6,278 participants questions about their dental habits and looked at their health records. Over 25 years of follow-up, 434 people had strokes.

The researchers found that those who flossed had a 22% lower risk of an ischemic stroke (a blocked artery), a 44% lower risk of a cardioembolic stroke (blood clots pumped into the brain), and a 12% lower risk of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm).

As a result, the researchers believe that more frequent flossing has a greater chance of reducing stroke risk.

These findings are due to be presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles next week.

Flossing and infection

Dr Souvik Sen, from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, was the study’s lead researcher. He said: ‘Oral health behaviours are linked to inflammation and artery hardening.

‘Flossing may reduce stroke risk by lowering oral infections and inflammation and encouraging other healthy habits.

‘Many people have expressed that dental care is costly. Flossing is a healthy habit that is easy to adopt, affordable and accessible everywhere.’

Dr Daniel Lackland, a member of the Stroke Council, added: ‘This study offers more insights into the specific dental health behaviours that may be linked to stroke risks and potential risk reduction.

‘With further research, dental health practices could possibly be incorporated into “Life’s Essential 8” risk factors.’

The ‘Life’s Essential 8’ currently includes diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep, body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose and blood fat levels.
