Complete your year’s CPD with the North of England Dentistry Show

Here we take a deep dive into the Enhanced CPD Theatre at the North of England Dentistry Show and why it’s not one to be missed.

The North of England Dentistry Show is back and bigger than ever this year.

With over 85 speakers across 12 different lecture theatres, it’s expected to have the highest attendance so far.

With 2022 being a fully booked event it’s more important than ever to book your ticket to the show early to avoid disappointment.

The North of England Dentistry Show has its very own theatre dedicated to four GDC recommended CPD topics this year.

These topics are:

  • Legal and ethical issues: one hour
  • Complaints handling: one hour
  • Radiography and radiation protection: one hour
  • Safeguarding children and young people: one hour
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults: one hour.

On-top of this, there are more than 85 lectures across 11 other theatres at the show providing verified CPD.

You simply scan on the day and these certificates are available in your Dentistry Club account.

Not only can you get hours of CPD at the show, but every attendee will receive a complimentary one month membership to Dentistry Club Silver.

This grants access to Dentistry CPD which offers more than 500 hours of relevant CPD courses for all members of the dental team including recommended topics.

Legal and ethical issues

John Grant: Are associates really self-employed or are they simply workers? – sponsored by Acuity Law (30-minute CPD)

The law which determines whether someone is employed, self-employed, or a worker is a complex area particularly in light of the recent cases of Hughes v Rattan and Sejpal v Rodericks Dental Ltd.

There is and always has been a strong legal argument that associates are and always have in fact been employees. And an even stronger argument that they are workers with entitlement to sick pay and holiday pay.

With this topic coming under renewed scrutiny by HMRC and the courts, it is vital to review the position once again to consider what can be done to maintain associates self-employed status and the risks to practice owners by continuing to engage associates on a self-employed basis.

Gary Monaghan: Indemnity versus insurance: what do you need to know? – sponsored by All Med Pro and Professional Dental Indemnity (30-minute CPD)

The aims of this presentation are to one understand what the risks are in dentistry and how we got here.

Also, it will explore what cover is available to dental practitioners, what to look for and what are the common issues arising in how can we manage risks for how can we be safer and better practitioners.

Complaints handling

Sarah Ide: Dealing with complaints: how to avoid and resolve them if they occur – sponsored by Dental Defence Union (one-hour CPD)

Complaints are a fact of life in every dental practice.

And while no one likes to hear that a patient is unhappy, a complaint is also a golden opportunity to show your practice at its best, as well as uncover issues that need to be addressed.

This presentation will cover the key aspects of effective complaints handling, and provide you and your team with the confidence to respond promptly and professionally when a complaint arises.

Radiography and radiation protection

Andrew Gulson: An update on the safe use of X-ray equipment – sponsored by UK Health Security Agency (one-hour CPD)

Since the first edition of the Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment (the Dental GNs) was published in 2001, there have been significant changes in dental radiography.

These include a move from film-based to digital imaging techniques, the appearance of dental cone-beam CT and hand-held dental X-ray equipment. UK radiation protection legislation was also revised in 2018.

This talk will discuss the content and layout of the Dental GNs – 2nd Edition, and will draw attention to areas where the guidance differs from the first edition, or where new guidance is provided.

Safeguarding children and young people safeguarding vulnerable adults

Preetee Hylton: Safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults (two-hour CPD)

All team members of a dental organisation are responsible for the safeguarding of patients and their colleagues.

The most effective way to ensure children, young people and vulnerable adults are kept safe is for dental professionals to educate themselves to recognise signs of various types of abuse and be confident in raising concern, should the need arise.

It is essential for all dental practices to have a safeguarding policy and to carry out regular safeguarding training for all members of staff.

More speakers will be confirmed for this theatre closer to the time, so keep checking the website.
