Ultrasonic scaling trumps manual for clinician comfort

Jamini Bhadresa considers the benefits of ultrasonic scaling and why this technique leaves hand scaling behind with regards to reducing work-related injury and increased comfort for hygienists.

When I speak to hygienists three key facets that make their job so fulfilling come up time and again. The first, of course, is to provide excellent clinical service, the second is to have job satisfaction and enjoyment and the third is to be comfortable at work and not suffer physically as a result. Of these the final factor is crucial because without it, the other two cannot be achieved.

The advent of the ultrasonic scaler has changed the landscape for hygienists, so significantly that using hand instruments alone is no longer considered the most effective way to optimise treatment outcomes. The Cavitron Touch ultrasonic scaler from Dentsply Sirona moves at a speed of 30,000 cycles per second, producing a precise longitudinal sweeping motion that simply cannot be replicated by hand scaling. Many in the hygiene profession are now convinced that ultrasonic techniques are equally, if not more effective than hand instruments.

Wellbeing at work

Ultrasonic scaling certainly offers several major advantages over hand scaling for hygienists themselves. Hand fatigue and repetitive strain injury (RSI) is common amongst dental professionals, and nearly one-third of dental health professionals cite musculoskeletal disorders as the reason for early retirement. Using an ultrasonic scaler, a hygienist can complete scaling and root planing in a faster and more ergonomic way, without undue pressure or long periods working in an awkward position. This in turn helps to lessen strain on the hands, arms and shoulders, reducing the likelihood of developing more serious work-related injury in the future.

The Cavitron Touch Ultrasonic Scaling System from Dentsply Sirona is making great inroads in this area. Its ergonomic design can help hygienists create and maintain a healthy working posture and can reduce the likelihood of RSI and musculoskeletal issues. It features an intuitive touch screen interface and fully rotating handpiece that allows the insert to be rotated freely during the scaling procedure, making access much easier in hard-to-reach areas.

The Cavitron Touch Ultrasonic Scaling System also incorporates a wireless, rechargeable foot pedal, which removes the need to continuously hold down or pump the foot pedal, helping reduce leg and ankle discomfort and encourage a better working posture. All of these ergonomic benefits combine to make the Cavitron Touch a trusted partner in helping deliver faster, better and especially safer dental care.
