Dental professionals’ main concern is false complaints according to a new study

Dental professionals are most concerned about patients looking to falsely complain and seek legal and financial compensation.

A new study, from Dentorum, has shown the main concerns facing dental professionals and 78% said they were concerned about false complaints, with 41% of respondents being very concerned about the issue.

‘This research highlights some of the key concerns currently facing our profession,’ Sarah Simpson, general manager of Dentorum, said.

‘All too often, there is a tendency for individual practitioners to believe that they alone are worried about these issues, but we want to show that there are common themes across all practices.

‘More importantly, we have set up Dentorum to provide a forum where issues can be discussed and best practice shared.

‘There is a huge amount of valuable knowledge held by individuals, which if it was spread throughout the profession could be of immense benefit to both dentists and patients alike.’


Elsewhere, 72% of dental professionals are concerned about the future costs of professional indemnity cover with being 30% very concerned.

The risk of false complaints can be potentially exacerbated by patients having unrealistic expectations regarding the cost of private treatment – 68% of dental professionals believe this to be the case.

The study also showed that 85% of dental professionals are concerned about regulatory changes putting additional costs burdens on their practice and 40% are very concerned.

Two thirds (67%) of dental professionals don’t feel that trade bodies and associations are doing enough to support them.
