Building a referral engine: how specialist practices grow without paid acquisition

For specialist and high-value practices, the strongest growth has never come from paid ads – it has come from referrals. But most of those networks happened organically years ago and are quietly becoming fragile. This webinar shows how to replace the accidental referral network with a deliberate, systematised referral engine that compounds over years and consistently delivers patients no paid channel can match for cost or conversion.

It will:

  • Reposition referrals as a deliberate growth channel that can be systematised, not just a happy accident of good clinical work
  • Show specialist practices how a structured referral engine outperforms paid acquisition on cost, quality, and conversion rate for high-value treatments
  • Walk through the categories of referrer that matter most – GPs, specialist colleagues, allied health professionals, and existing patients
  • Provide a practical framework for building, maintaining, and growing referral relationships over time
  • Equip practices with the materials, systems, and patient experience needed to make referrals genuinely repeatable.

Learning outcomes

  • Audit your current referral network honestly – identifying where referrals are coming from, where they are not, and how fragile or resilient the current pipeline actually is
  • Identify the four categories of referrer that matter most for specialist practices and understand the right approach, cadence, and relationship style for each
  • Build a structured outreach system for GP and specialist relationships that goes beyond the occasional lunch and creates genuine, reciprocal, long-term referral partnerships
  • Develop the materials and patient experience that make referrals easy to give – from referrer-facing collateral to the patient journey that turns one referral into a story worth retelling
  • Apply a structured patient referral system inside the practice that goes well beyond the refer-a-friend sticker on the wall and produces consistent, measurable patient-to-patient referrals
  • Build a 12-month referral engine roadmap with clear targets, owners, and measurable outcomes – replacing organic referrals with deliberate, defensible ones that compound year over year.
