My journey into UK dentistry: things I wish I knew

Starting a dental career in a new country can be both exciting and challenging.

In this webinar, Archana Naik, dentolegal consultant at Dental Protection, will share her journey – from qualifying as a dentist in India and building a successful career in UK dentistry, to supporting members through her role as a dentolegal consultant.

Archana has been a trained mentor and supported many dental professionals through their overseas registration examinations and integration into UK practice.

Reflecting on her own experiences, as well as those of her mentees and colleagues through her professional journey in the UK, Archana will explore key topics that are particularly relevant to delivering dental care in the UK.

Using real life clinical scenarios, she will share practical insights and advice she wishes she had known when first navigating UK practice.

She will offer her top tips on how to prevent, deescalate and manage dentolegal challenges in daily practice and how appropriate support can make all the difference.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify common challenges faced by international dental graduates when adapting to UK practice
  • Gain unique insights into the way dental care is delivered into the UK including the role of effective communication in delivering safe patient care
  • Develop an understanding of how to prevent, deescalate and manage dentolegal challenges in daily practice
  • Discuss when, why and how to seek advice and guidance from their indemnity provider and support that is available to them.

Speaker: Archana Naik

After qualifying as a dentist in India, Archana moved to the UK, and her career began again as a dental care professional before registering as a dentist through the International Qualifying Examination. She has worked as a clinician in the UK for over 25 years across a broad range of dental settings and is currently a dentolegal consultant at Dental Protection.

Her journey of becoming a mentor began by supporting colleagues through integration and dentolegal challenges, including complaints and litigation. She is a trained mentor for dental professionals as well as senior leaders, and is a registered mentor on the NHS hub. She is also the membership secretary at Dental Mentors UK.

As part of her Master of Arts in Dental Law and Ethics from the University of Bedfordshire, she has carried out research into the mentorship and support needs of international dental graduates in the UK. This work been accepted for publication by the British Dental Journal (BDJ) and is due to be published soon.

Having completed training with the NHS Leadership Academy, she has delivered workshops in leadership and communication. She is also currently the secretary for the Coventry and Warwickshire section at the British Dental Association, through which she organises continuing professional development (CPD) events.

In her current role at Dental Protection, alongside supporting dental professionals through complaints and regulatory challenges, she delivers tailored training content to support international dental graduates as well as UK graduates. She also presents educational content on behalf of the General Dental Council for clinicians who are new to UK practice.
