A new arrival

Dentistry.co.uk talks to Derek Hampton about EMS Dental and why it is opening its first office in the UK

Derek Hampton began his career in a company specialising in lighting for dental practices.

A few years later, he moved to Satelec (now Acteon), eventually becoming the managing director.

Now the general manager of EMS Dental for the UK and Ireland, Derek has acquired invaluable insight into what dental professionals need from their industry partners.

What attracted you to working with EMS Dental as they enter the UK market?

DH: I think EMS Dental is known as a high-profile company with excellent products and a reputation for reliability. That was the catalyst for me and when I went to Switzerland for the hiring process, I became even more excited about the prospect because the team there are so enthusiastic! I am also excited about sharing the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol with more dental professionals.

What is so special about GBT?

DH:I think that GBT has transformed practice and patient experience. GBT consists of treatment protocols based on individual-patient diagnosis and risk assessments, in order to achieve optimal results.

Plaque biofilm is acknowledged to be one of the main causes of caries, periodontal disease and peri-implant infections. An effective at-home oral hygiene regimen, combined with professional measures, is necessary to keep biofilm under control, helping to achieve improved oral and systemic health.

Using GBT in practice supports this goal in the least-invasive way, with the highest levels of comfort, safety and efficiency. It’s a ‘game-changer’.

What else does EMS Dental offer dental healthcare professionals?

DH: EMS Dental has a well-deserved reputation for its dental prophylaxis and prevention products, including the Piezon and Air-flow ranges, which are integral to the all-important GBT protocol. Each tool offers the clinical team the opportunity to provide minimally-invasive care for their patients.

Their efficacy has been proven through rigorous testing. For example, The Air-flow Prophylaxis Master was developed in the EMS Research Centre, backed up by over 100,000 hours of technical and clinical testing, in collaboration with leading dental professionals from all over the world.

But EMS Dental is not just about providing products – it also offers seamless repair, maintenance and customer service.

Its new base in the UK will enable it to add to the great work its distributors (Optident and Henry Schein) have already done.

What importance does EMS Dental place on training?

DH: It embraces training wholeheartedly, including sharing the GBT protocol. Plus, if you buy a piece of equipment then you need to be able to use it correctly.

EMS Dental does this via UK-based trainers managed by the Swiss Dental Academy. They have an incredible continuing education and training concept, making the Academy pioneers in dental prophylaxis education.

Based on the latest scientific knowledge, theory and practice, courses are taught in terms of practice-oriented requirements. Under the guidance of experienced trainers, EMS customers can learn how to provide their patients with gentle, yet effective, professional dental cleaning.

What can we expect from EMS Dental this year?

DH: The UK office will be up and running in 2019, and there will be a launch event to celebrate. It will have a significant focus on GBT, as part of a comprehensive preventive concept to preserve patients’ oral health and to make them feel good.

There will also be more courses on the training calendar and the reps will be available to offer more in-practice support.

I’m thrilled to be in a position to raise awareness of the benefits that GBT offers practices, clinicians and patients. 2019 is going to be very exciting for current and future members of the EMS family!
