Renfert introduces the BASIC prebonder XS, a compact fine-sandblasting unit for zirconia surface activation before adhesive cementation.
Surface activation before adhesive cementation
Modern zirconia materials offer a wider range of restorative options, including minimally invasive restorations and veneers. According to Renfert, these indications place greater demands on adhesive cementation, making reproducible surface activation an important part of the workflow.
The company says BASIC prebonder XS is designed specifically for zirconia surface activation before adhesive cementation. It is intended to standardise a process that can otherwise vary according to the user and the sandblasting parameters selected.
Renfert describes the unit as a dedicated alternative to universal sandblasting units, which are designed for a broader range of applications. The company’s approach is to bring the process parameters together in one system for this specific workflow.
Three factors in one system
Renfert identifies three factors that need to work together for standardised zirconia surface activation:
- Reproducible sandblasting energy
- Specially developed nozzle geometry
- An aluminium oxide sandblasting medium with defined material properties.
Fine sandblasting with aluminium oxide creates the conditions for bonding with MDP-containing adhesive systems. Renfert says that working pressure, working distance, nozzle geometry and the sandblasting medium can each affect the result.
Controlling pressure and distance
The BASIC prebonder XS has a precision pressure gauge that can be adjusted within Renfert’s stated validated operating range of 0.6 to 1.0 bar. The recommended 0.8 bar setting is marked on the gauge, while the Prebonder control tip is designed to maintain a 10 mm working distance.
Renfert says these features are intended to give users greater control over the two parameters that determine sandblasting energy: pressure and distance. The unit is designed to support a repeatable surface-activation step before adhesive cementation.
Nozzle, medium and process verification
Renfert says the Prebonder jet nozzle is designed to produce a homogeneous sandblasting pattern. The company’s Prebonder surface pro aluminium oxide medium is presented as an integral part of the system, with specified particle size, geometry, hardness and purity.
The Prebonder control pad provides a quick check of system function. According to Renfert, it can help reveal potential issues such as pressure loss, a blocked nozzle or a low abrasive level.
Fitting the workflow
The compact unit is designed for use with an existing sandblasting chamber and extraction unit, or with a separate grinding box with extraction. Its 500 g tank is intended for Prebonder surface pro, which Renfert says is aligned with typical practice consumption levels.
For teams working with zirconia restorations, Renfert presents the BASIC prebonder XS as a way to make surface activation a more defined and controllable part of the adhesive workflow.
