What benefits does the new Varios Combi Pro2 bring to ultrasonic and powder therapy? Cat Edney shares her thoughts.
As a dental hygienist and dental therapist I’m delighted to have been one of the first clinicians in the UK to use NSK’s new combined ultrasonic and powder therapy device, the Varios Combi Pro2.
I’ve been a hygienist and therapist since 2008 and have worked in Canary Wharf for nearly 17 years. I’m also a clinical educator for the NSK Ikigai Oral Hygiene Community. This aims to provide gold standard education as well as building a vibrant community of like-minded clinicians who want to further to professional skills and status of hygienists and therapists.
I was delighted to be part of NSK’s team at IDS 2025 in Cologne. During the event, I was able to check out the advanced new features of the Varios Combi Pro2 for myself and demonstrate them to fellow dental professionals for the first time.
What’s new?
Along with its sleek design and clear display panel, the first stand out feature of the Varios Combi Pro2 is that the ultrasonic handpiece is now made of titanium, making it 30% lighter than its predecessor. With non-slip, scratch-resistant Duragrip coating, the handpiece is ergonomically designed to be comfortable in the clinician’s hand and is beautifully balanced. There’s even a feedback function whereby power is automatically adjusted to avoid excessive tip wear.
The handpiece can be used on general, perio or endo settings and these can be changed with a touch of a button. The power settings are easily adjusted up and down using the buttons on the machine or via the wireless foot pedal, putting the user in complete control.
Another great new feature is the heated water on both ultrasonic and powder therapy sides, providing exceptional comfort for patients throughout their prophylaxis appointment. The heated water can be easily turned on or off according to your patient’s preference.
You play your way!
What I really love about the Varios Combi Pro2 is its multi-functionality, meaning you can choose the power settings to suit the patient that presents to you in your chair.
If my patient has heavy calculus I can choose robust NSK ultrasonic tips or general high power settings for removal. Alternatively, if I have a patient with soft biofilm, I can simply reduce the power with just a touch of a button.
The multi-functionality is saying that you play your way. Whatever type of patient presents to you, as the clinician, you can make the choice in how you would like to treat them.
Powder therapy made easy
When it comes to powder therapy, the Varios Combi Pro2 has the option of using both supra and sub-gingival powders. These are contained completely within individual powder chambers, reducing concerns when it comes to maintenance or worries about blockages.
Switching between powder chambers is so simple. One click of the button on the side on the unit will remove the chamber and the new one simply clicks into place.
The Varios Combi Pro2 also comes with a jet nozzle for precise, targeted, treatment – whether gingival or supragingival. The jet nozzle narrows the beam of spray, removing stains on dentine, cementum and restorative materials without the need for aggressive powders. This nozzle is safe to use on the majority of patients.
The wireless foot pedal means there are no more worries about trailing wires in surgery. The foot pedal has the option to increase and decrease the settings for both ultrasonic and powder therapy, plus you can switch between general, endo and perio settings with the option to use the water only button for powder therapy.
The Varios Combi Pro2 is easy to clean and maintain using non-alcohol wipes on all surfaces. Four auto-cleaning modes can be run as appropriate after each patient session or at the end of the day. Also, the whole system can be flushed twice weekly using NSK b.clean solution and the CLM setting on the device.
