A dental technician’s guide to embracing change

How do we keep up with the changing industry and who can we trust? Ashley Byrne shares his tips for staying ahead.

The digitisation of dental technology has rapidly transformed our industry. For many dental technicians, digital workflows are now the norm, and it’s hard to imagine running a lab without them.

However, not every laboratory has embraced this change. A surprising number still avoid intraoral scans (IOS) and have not adopted digital workflows. This hesitancy raises an important question: how do we stay up to date with technology whether we’re industry veteran or just starting out?

Why digital adoption matters

If your lab hasn’t integrated IOS capabilities, you’re not just behind the curve, you’re missing out on significant opportunities. I started receiving IOS files in 2008 from a company called Cadent, now more commonly recognised as Itero. Back then, it was a game-changer, and today around 80% of my lab’s work originates from IOS files.

The benefits of digital technology are undeniable. Faster workflows, increased accuracy, and better client communication are just the start. While adopting this technology might seem daunting, it’s never too late to start.

The key is knowing where to begin and how to navigate the sea of options.

Finding reliable information

In the digital age, finding trustworthy information can be a challenge. Social media is a double-edged sword. While it’s tempting to turn to these platforms for recommendations, they often provide more noise than signal.

Social media platforms are filled with posts promoting ‘the best scanner’ or ‘the only software you’ll ever need.’ These claims are often driven by a psychological phenomenon called the ‘bandwagon effect,’ where people seek social validation for their choices. This can lead to biased opinions and unhelpful advice.

Instead of relying solely on social media, consider attending industry events and trade shows, where you can see demonstrations and compare technologies side by side. Professional networks, such as industry associations and local groups, offer opportunities to connect with other professionals who have firsthand experience with various technologies.

Additionally, many manufacturers provide free or low-cost demos and training sessions, making it easier to assess whether their solutions meet your lab’s needs. Trusted publications and unbiased reviews in reputable professional journals can also provide valuable insights.

Starting your digital journey

If your lab is ready to embrace digital technology, the process doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start by evaluating your specific needs. Identify which processes in your lab would benefit the most from digitisation – such as model scanning or digital impressions – and focus your efforts there.

Training is another crucial step; even the most advanced technology won’t be effective without a team that understands how to use it properly. Partnering with manufacturers or consultants who have a proven track record can also help ensure a smooth implementation process.

Adopting new systems gradually can make the transition less daunting. Introduce one technology at a time and give your team the opportunity to adapt before moving on to the next. Finally, measure your success by tracking metrics such as turnaround times, accuracy and customer satisfaction to gauge the impact of your investments.

Staying ahead

The dental industry will continue to evolve, and staying ahead requires a commitment to lifelong learning. Embrace opportunities for continued education through webinars, workshops, and certifications. Keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to try new approaches.

Most importantly, focus on building a culture of adaptability within your lab. When your team sees the benefits of innovation firsthand, they’ll be more likely to embrace change.

The transition to digital workflows might feel overwhelming, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to elevate the standard of care we provide. By staying informed and taking measured steps, you can ensure your lab remains competitive and continues to thrive in this dynamic industry.

Digital technology isn’t just for the future – it’s here and now and the possibilities are limitless. Together, we can navigate this journey and shape a brighter future for our profession.
