Everything you need to know about apprenticeships

Everything you need to know about apprenticeships

As we approach National Apprenticeship Week from 10 to 16 February 2025, Bupa Dental Care answers everything you need to know about apprenticeships in the world of dentistry.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a fantastic learning opportunity that relates directly to your job, allowing you to gain nationally recognised qualifications.

As an apprentice, you’ll experience a mix of hands-on training in the workplace and off-the-job learning. This means you can put your new skills into practice right away in a real work environment, helping you develop your experience, thrive in your role, and provide even care and support to our patients.

How do apprenticeships work?

Bupa partners with the best training providers so when you finish, you’ll have the most up-to-date, relevant knowledge and practice. All programmes are industry-recognised, and the support team will be with you every step of the way as you study.

Can you do an apprenticeship at any age?

Apprenticeships are available for those aged 16 and above – people of all ages come to Bupa to start something new. This makes an apprenticeship an excellent way to retrain, upskill, or change careers completely.

What skills will I need?

For those looking to move into the health and social care sector, having natural empathy, compassion and enthusiasm are invaluable and will stand you in good stead.

Will I learn the new skills required?

Learning new things can be daunting, but many people have more transferrable skills than they think. No one is expected to know everything on their first day. An apprenticeship often provides a reassuring way to try something new and take that initial step into a different sector and the world of work.

How much do apprentices get paid?

Apprenticeships offer opportunities to ‘earn while you learn’, and many apprentices end with a job and a pay rise to recognise their new skills.

What other support will be available?

It’s a good idea to look at whether your new company offers wellbeing services, like Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), or if they operate a buddy or mentor system to help you find your feet. You should also be able to access support from your line manager, apprenticeships team and your learning provider.

Whether you’re starting out, joining from another industry, or looking to take your skills to the next level, the dental sector provides many different opportunities to advance your career.

Bupa Dental Care has a wide range of apprenticeships available across the UK for applicants aged 16 and above. These include Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard Level 3 roles, which are available now. These programmes last between 18-24 months and offer hands-on experience, which can lead to numerous career pathways within the dental sector.
