Three ways to master patient communication

Manrina Rhode shares her three top tips for mastering communication to help you enhance your patient interactions.

Effective patient communication is the cornerstone of any thriving cosmetic dental practice. At our recent DRMR Mentorship face-to-face event, hosted at the DRMR Clinic, we had the privilege of learning from renowned communication expert Ashley Latter.

The day was packed with insights, but here are three standout lessons to help you enhance your patient interactions and grow your practice.

1. Build and leverage your patient database

Your existing patients are your best advocates. Ashley highlighted the importance of moving beyond social media to build a dedicated patient email database. This approach gives you full control over communication, ensuring your message reaches your audience directly.

A robust follow-up system, such as newsletters, keeps patients engaged and encourages repeat visits. For example, send regular updates about treatments, success stories, or special offers. This proactive approach not only reminds patients of your services but also inspires them to recommend your practice to friends and family, expanding your reach organically.

2. Ditch the jargon

Technical dental language can overwhelm patients and hinder decision-making. Instead of explaining treatments in these terms, focus on relatable, patient-friendly language. For instance, rather than detailing the chemical components of teeth whitening, frame it as a way to achieve a brighter, more confident smile.

Patients appreciate clear, simple communication that makes them feel informed, understood and at ease.

3. Focus on outcomes, not processes

Patients care most about results. Ashley compared this to booking a holiday—people are more interested in the destination than the plane’s specifications. Highlight the benefits of a treatment, such as improved confidence, rather than overloading them with technical details upfront.

The next mentorship face-to-face event will take place on Thursday 6 March 2025 in London. Register your interest and our academy manager will be in touch to answer your questions.
