Surviving Christmas as a dental nurse

Surviving Christmas as a dental nurse

Rebecca Silver shares nine tips for navigating the hectic festive period as a dental nurse this Christmas.

Christmas is a time of joy, celebration and togetherness – but for dental nurses, it’s also one of the busiest times of the year. Between end-of-year appointments, last-minute emergencies (looking at you, crown preps), and managing personal holiday plans, the festive season can be as exhausting as it is magical.

To help you navigate this period with less stress and more cheer, here are some tips and tricks for surviving the festive season!

C – communication

In the world of dentistry, clear communication is essential at all times, but it becomes even more critical during the Christmas period. With patients rushing to book last-minute appointments before practices close, and others balancing reduced hours or team shortages, things can easily go awry without proper communication.

One way to mitigate potential problems is with a morning huddle. This allows the team to review diaries, identify and address potential issues, and set expectations. It’s also the perfect time to discuss strategies for handling late arrivals, cancellations, or emergency walk-ins. This will help the whole team feel prepared and minimise misunderstandings.

When it comes to patients, clarity is key. Confirm appointments well in advance and remind patients of practice policies, such as charges for missed visits. A friendly but firm tone can save you from unnecessary stress. For example: ‘We want to ensure everyone is seen before Christmas, so please let us know as soon as possible if you need to rebook.’

H – humour

The holiday season is meant to be joyful, so don’t underestimate the power of humour to keep spirits high. A busy dental practice can be stressful, but sharing a laugh with your colleagues or patients can lighten the mood and help everyone stay positive. Just maybe steer clear of discussing who got into trouble at the Christmas party!

R – rest

Rest can feel elusive during the Christmas season, but it’s essential for maintaining your energy and focus. As a dental nurse, you’re often on your feet all day, juggling tasks and supporting both patients and colleagues. Without adequate rest, it’s easy to burn out.

Take advantage of any breaks during your day to recharge, even if it’s just a few quiet minutes to sip tea or stretch. When your workday is done, give yourself permission to switch off completely. Avoid checking work emails at home and set boundaries to protect your personal time. This also applies to social media, especially if you’re a member of dental groups that may discuss work-related topics.

I – infection control

Winter brings not only Christmas cheer but also colds, flu and other illnesses. As a dental nurse, you’re constantly in close contact with patients, which means strict infection control is vital.

Ensure that your practice’s sterilisation protocols are followed meticulously, from disinfecting surfaces to properly storing instruments. Encourage patients who feel unwell to contact the practice to rebook, minimising the chance of a practice-wide illness outbreak.

Don’t forget about your own health! Wash your hands frequently, wear appropriate PPE, and take care of yourself. Staying healthy means you’ll be better equipped to care for others.

S – self-care

Self-care often takes a back seat during busy periods, but it’s crucial for your mental and physical wellbeing. As dental nurses, we spend so much time looking after others that we sometimes forget to look after ourselves.

Find small ways to prioritise self-care, even on hectic days. This could mean treating yourself to a nice coffee on the way to work, listening to your favourite podcast during your commute, or practising mindfulness between appointments.

Outside of work, make time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s a festive baking session, a long walk with your pets or family, or curling up with a good book. Remember: self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate – it’s about doing what nourishes you.

T – teamwork

The festive season is a team effort, and a supportive work environment can make all the difference. In a busy dental practice, no one can handle everything alone, so lean on your colleagues and be ready to step in when they need help. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re overwhelmed – it’s a sign of collaboration, not weakness.

M – mindset

Your mindset can shape how you experience the Christmas period. While it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of back-to-back appointments and demanding patients, try to focus on the positive aspects of your job.

The festive period offers fantastic opportunities to connect with patients. Some may share stories about their family traditions, while others might bring small tokens of appreciation. These moments remind us of the impact we have on people’s lives.

When things get challenging, practise gratitude. Reflect on what you’re thankful for, whether it’s supportive colleagues, a patient who made you smile, or the satisfaction of a job well done.

A – adaptability

Flexibility is key to surviving Christmas in a dental practice. The season often brings unexpected challenges, from last-minute diary changes to emergency treatments. Being adaptable allows you to navigate these situations without losing your cool.

For instance, if a patient cancels at short notice, use that time wisely. Catch up on tasks, organise supplies, or simply enjoy a well-earned cup of tea.

S – snacks

When days are packed with appointments, regular meals might fall by the wayside. That’s where snacks come in! With sales reps, suppliers and team members contributing to the kitchen’s festive stash, there’s bound to be an abundance of goodies. Make the most of it, but don’t forget to balance the treats with healthier options when you can.

Surviving Christmas as a dental nurse isn’t just about getting through the busy days. It’s about finding moments of joy and connection amidst the chaos. By focusing on communication, teamwork and self-care, we can make this festive period both manageable and rewarding.

Remember: you play an essential role in helping patients look and feel their best for the festivities. So take a moment to celebrate your hard work, embrace the spirit of the season, and don’t forget to enjoy a well-deserved rest when it’s all over.

Here’s to surviving (and thriving) this Christmas!
