NHS to private: how will the community react?

Ian Mills explains why his initial concerns about how the local community would perceive his practice’s transition from NHS to private were unfounded.

When Torrington Dental decided to make the move to private dentistry, the team had initial concerns about how they would be perceived within the community. However, with a plan in place and support from Practice Plan, they were able to communicate the change effectively to their patients.

In this short video Ian Mills, co-owner and dentist at Torrington Dental, reflects on the practice’s significant transition away from NHS dentistry and shares the journey of growth, highlighting the support received from Practice Plan.

Ian acknowledges the weight of his choice, recognising that it was not just a career shift, but a change in patient care for the better. He found a shared vision and culture with Practice Plan, evident in the training sessions that emphasised patient support, customer care, and advice on the vital business aspects of dentistry. What stood out most for Ian was the open communication within the Practice Plan team, and his regional support manager Ian Eslick who provided him with the right advice and support whenever he needed it.

Surprisingly, the transition wasn’t as daunting as he initially feared. With structures and processes in place along with the support from Practice Plan, Ian discovered that effective communication was key to ensuring patients felt they had choices during the conversion. He credits the support from his staff, including Samantha Paine, head receptionist with 20 years’ experience, who has witnessed the practice’s growth since going private.

A community feel

Also in the video Alison Ellam, receptionist, reflects on Practice Plan’s inspirational training events while Rhys Gabe, co-owner and dentist, shares his initial concerns about patient retention.

However, he found that the careful delivery of their message reassured patients, allowing the practice to maintain what was most important to them: its community feel.

Finally Sammy Holt, another dentist within the practice, emphasises the limitations of NHS dentistry. He explains how the shift to private care has empowered them to provide the quality treatments they believe in. Together, their stories illustrate that leaving the NHS was not just a decision. It was a transformative journey towards better patient care.
