Competition for foundation trainees to win all-expenses-paid composite layering course in Belgium

Early-career dentists and dental therapists could be in the running for a fully-funded training event in Belgium, thanks to a recently launched charity.

The Tom Bereznicki Charitable Educational Foundation, in collaboration with the College of General Dentistry and GC, has 18 places available on the CGDent and GC Award for foundation trainees.

Dentists and dental therapists who qualified in the UK or Ireland in 2024 or who are undertaking dental foundation training or dental vocational training are invited to enter a competition to earn their place on the course.

The two-day composite layering course will take place at GC’s education campus in Belgium on 10 to 11 July 2025. The prize is worth around £1,400 per place and includes international travel, hotel accommodation and meals.

The event, which will involve lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions, will cover the following topics:

  • Colour perception for recreating natural looking anterior direct restorations
  • Using a detailed layering technique with only inside and outside shades in a Class IV
  • Dealing with the challenging situation of masking a strong discolouration with a direct veneer
  • Finishing and polishing protocols
  • Injection moulding technique (IMT) – principles, indications and clinical guidelines
  • Treating posterior and anterior tooth wear with IMT
  • Extending the limits of a direct Cl II restoration with a fibre reinforced and a high-filled injectable composite.

Restorative case

To enter, entrants must submit a restorative case that they are about to start treating. It should involve more than one tooth, one of which must be an anterior tooth, as well as the use of composite to restore teeth.

Entries close for the competition on 14 February 2025, and cases must be submitted by 11 April 2025. The winners will then be chosen by a panel made up of trustees from the Tom Bereznicki Charitable Educational Foundation and qualified CGDent members, who will reveal their selection in May 2025.

The upcoming course comes after a successful pilot this year, which saw 15 winners travel to Belgium for a two-day composite layering course. Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

One participant said: ‘The course offered an excellent balance between theoretical and hands-on components of learning, led by an erudite instructor, who offered support to each delegate.’

‘The main things I gained from the course are time management, enriched patient communication skills and overall restorative skills.’
