Bupa launches dental allowance within health insurance

Bupa has launched a new dental allowance for its consumer health insurance customers to help people to stay on top of their oral health.

Bupa consumer health insurance policies now include access to a dental appointment every policy year. Customers receive a £300 allowance towards restorative treatments, including crowns or fillings for every individual named on the policy. Bupa is the only UK health insurer to include dental care as standard on all consumer policies.

How will it work?

From 1 August, anyone starting a new policy or renewing theircover has access to a dental appointment every policy year. This can be carried out at one of 400 Bupa Dental Care practices across the UK. This can be used for a routine check-up, a new patient examination, or emergency appointment. If further care is advised by the dentist, customers have a £300 allowance within their policy towards restorative treatment, such as crowns or fillings.

All those named on a consumer UK insurance policy will receive the allowance. This means the whole family can benefit from fast access to high-quality dental services at Bupa Dental Care. If a policy holder uses this dental benefit, it will not affect their no claims discount or low claims bonus.

Bupa is the only UK health insurer to include dental care as standard on all consumer policies. This access to annual dental care is vital, reaffirmed with recent data from the Bupa Wellbeing Index (Bupa, 2024). This found that on average adults across the UK haven’t been to the dentist for two years. One in six (18%) haven’t been for over three years.

‘A seamless experience’

Dr Neil Sikka, director of dentistry at Bupa Dental Care, said: ‘Dental check-ups are essential for maintaining oral health, which is a crucial part of our overall health. Helping families to see a dentist every year promotes good oral health habits and enables problems to be found earlier when they’re easier to treat.’

Richard Washington, interim general manager at Bupa UK Insurance said: ‘Bupa has a unique ability to join up health insurance and healthcare provision, enabling us to support our customers’ health needs more holistically.

‘This innovative connected care approach not only aims to enhance overall wellbeing but also creates a seamless experience for our customers. We’ve simplified the process for using the dental allowance. Customers only need to tell the practice they have Bupa health insurance and provide their policy number. We’ll handle the payment up to the allowance.’
