Bristol Dental School invests in £36 million facility

After more than 80 years at Bristol Dental Hospital, the Bristol Dental School is moving to a £36 million location with brand new facilities.

Bristol Dental School will be moving from Bristol Dental Hospital to the University of Bristol’s (UOB) brand new campus, Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. The new campus, which focuses on digital, business and social innovation, is said to provide an environment ‘fit for the 21st century’.

Opening in September 2023, the university has said the new dental school will allow students to ‘put theory into practice’ by working with the local community to offer treatment to those in need. In addition, the £36 million dental school is said to have ‘exceptional’ state-of-the-art facilities and ‘extensive’ communal spaces.

Barry Main, head of Bristol Dental School, said: ‘The majority of teaching in our new primary care facility, comprising 119 chairs and world-class facilities, will see students working in multi-disciplinary teams.

‘Dental, hygiene and therapy students, as well as trainee dental nurses, will be able to mirror real-world practice. Our trainees will develop skills crucial to success in primary care dentistry where most of them will spend their careers.

‘Each student will leave us better prepared for day one of foundation training. Links with local NHS partners will be maintained through attendance at specialist clinics and in postgraduate education.

‘We are exploring innovative models of care, including shared-care arrangements with local GDPs, to ensure our students’ training needs are met, and our local populations’ oral healthcare needs are addressed.’

Hear more about it at the South West Dentistry Show

Bristol Dental School clinical co-directors, Gus van Riessen and Chris Bell, will both be speaking at this year’s South West Dentistry Show.

Taking place on Saturday 1 July at Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol, the show has a leading line-up of world-class speakers and clinicians. Each lecture is CPD-verified, meaning attendees can gain hours of CPD on the day.

Gus and Chris’ lecture will introduce the brand-new Bristol Dental School facility, as well as its models for delivering dental education and patient care. They will also discuss the new school building, its facilities and the school’s rationale for the move.

In addition, they will provide an outline of their plans regarding postgraduate education and the different routes to engagement with GDPs in and around Bristol.
