We speak with dental hygienist and therapist Amie Holder-Soares about her aesthetics business, secret talent and a hairy experience in the clinic.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Amie Holder-Soares (The Cambridge Hygienist). I am a dental hygienist/therapist and qualified in 2012 from the University of Sheffield.

How did you first get into dentistry?

After college, I thought I wanted to be a general nurse. After one day of shadowing a nurse in a hospital, I realised that it wasn’t for me.

A position for a dental nurse came up and I took it. Never ever looked back.

I was a dental nurse for almost five years, became an oral health educator and started my radiography. I worked with an incredible dentist who pushed me and really believed in me.

After that, I applied for university, and here I am.

What’s your strangest professional experience?

So many…what to choose!

So, I was newly qualified, and I was scaling away at a patient’s teeth and kept finding all these little hairs. I was taking the tweezers, pulling the hair out from between the teeth…one at a time. Honestly, I couldn’t figure out why this patient had so many hairs in his mouth.

Then I looked down at his arm and it was completely bald. His nervous habit was biting the hairs out of his arm!

Away from dentistry, what are you passionate about?

Am I allowed to say wine?!

Of course, my loving children and hubby are my world. However, I do have an aesthetics business (Get Lippy Aesthetics) and recently was a finalist for Businesswoman of the Year Award. It’s only three years old, but we already have seven locations which we work out of. So, as you can imagine, it takes up any spare time I have.

Tell us something nobody else knows about you.

I can pick anything up with my feet. Literally anything. It’s a life skill! It’s hereditary, it’s in my blood!

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I’d like to be Prime Minister!
