NHS Scotland amends Statement of Dental Remuneration

Statement of Dental RemunerationJulian English reports on NHS Scotland’s latest Statement of Dental Remuneration changes and what areas it affects.

NHS Scotland has amended its Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR). It now advises changes to the geographical areas and eligibility criteria for determination of its recruitment and retention allowance.

The changes came into effect on 7 February 2022.

PCA memorandum and full SDR edits

PCA memorandum and full SDR have been edited to correct an error in the list of eligible areas.

Paragraph 14 of the PCA memorandum has also been updated to provide details of how to make a claim for the allowance for those dentists undertaking an approved course of vocational training.

Geographical eligibility

Qualifying classification area 1 includes:

  1. Dalmellington and Patna within Ayrshire and Arran Health Board
  2. Kelso and Berwickshire (excluding Eyemouth) within Borders Health Board
  3. Dumfries and Galloway Health Board
  4. Auchtermuchty within Fife Health Board
  5. Moray within Grampian Health Board
  6. Highland Health Board
  7. Shetland Health Board
  8. Orkney Health Board
  9. Western Isles Health Board.

Qualifying classification area two includes Banff, Fraserburgh and Huntly within Grampian Health Board.

Amount of allowance

Where a dentist, who meets the requirements specified, provides general dental services in a classification one area, the amount of allowance is £25,000 over a two-year period. This is at £12,500 per annum, for dentists who meet the conditions.

Dentists who only qualify for a one-year allowance in classification area one will get £12,500.

Where a dentist, who meets the requirements, provides general dental services in a classification two area, the amount of allowance is £15,000 over a two year period. This is at £7,500 per annum, for dentists who meet the conditions.

Dentists who only qualify for a one-year allowance in classification area two will get £7,500.

The amendment shall not affect any rights or liabilities acquired or incurred under or by virtue of any provision of the Statement of Dental Remuneration amended or replaced by the amendment.
