The secret dentist – remember who you are

successThe Secret Dentist urges us to remember that you are a healthcare professional and make sure you crave the right things in this month’s column.

My column last month couldn’t have been more apt after what we saw happen in the world of football last week.

Was it greed? Was it FOMO? Was it pure capitalism at its worst?

It is amazing what can happen when even supposedly intelligent individuals squirrel themselves away to come up with a bigger and better way to make themselves great.

The danger is always that you start to believe everything you say because you are only talking to yourself/yourselves. You end up agreeing with yourself/yourselves that what you are doing is right and just and honest and for the greater good.

It is only then when you talk to everybody else – the rest of the world, that you realise how ridiculous you look.

The top end of the European elite football clubs are looking somewhat ridiculous at the moment.

Don’t fall into the same trap. Remember, you are a healthcare professional.

Remember by Joy Harjo (1951- )

Remember the sky that you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon, know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the
strongest point of time. Remember sundown
and the giving away to night.
Remember your birth, how your mother struggled
to give you form and breath. You are evidence of
her life, and her mother’s, and hers.
Remember your father. He is your life, also.
Remember the earth whose skin you are:
red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth
brown earth, we are earth.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
Remember language comes from this.
Remember the dance language is, that life is.

Joy Harjo was appointed the new United States poet laureate in 2019. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1951, Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke/Creek nation.

Make sure you crave the right things.
