Think about your oral health this pancake day

pancakeAs pancake day approaches, Brits are being reminded of the serious damage sweet toppings can do to your oral health.

The warnings come from White Glo, a specialist tooth whitening brand, which has put together a guide on alternative pancake toppings that could help limit the damage to your oral health.

‘Pancake day is often seen as a day of indulgence before giving something up for Lent, but by making a few simple swaps you can still enjoy your favourite treats, without the added damage to your teeth,’ White Glo’s dental expert, Jordan Kirk, said.

‘Enamel damage can last long after high sugar foods are consumed, so I’d recommend brushing your teeth more than you normally would, to get rid of excess sugar from your mouth.’

Alternative toppings

  • Swap lemon and sugar for fresh fruit and cinnamon – this will reduce the insulin spike from the sugar and reduce the acid attack from the lemon
  • Swap Nutella for raw cacao or chocolate spreads containing less sugar – Nutella contains 8.3g of sugar per portion
  • Honey and syrup contain high amounts of sugar – swap them for a natural protein-packed peanut butter
  • Swapping ice cream for a natural Greek yoghurt could more than half the sugar consumption.
