Online referrals – managing confidential patient data

The Dentistry Cloud keeps patient data secure while simplifying the referral process.

The CEO of The Dentistry Cloud, an online referral portal for dentists, is encouraging practices to manage their referrals online in a bid to avoid the potential pitfalls of mishandling patient data. 

Charlie Nicholas, who limits his practice to endodontics and provides training courses on root canal procedures throughout the UK, came up with the idea of The Dentistry Cloud after years of receiving handwritten referrals by post or via an email system.

Digital age

‘Despite guidance from the General Dental Council and Care Quality Commission, I couldn’t understand why we were sending confidential patient information between practices through the post or an unsecure email network,’ explained Charlie.

‘We live in the digital age, but as a profession we just weren’t utilising the tools available.’

After scouring the market for a solution, Charlie decided to design and develop his own online referral portal specifically for dental practices.

Charlie says: ‘As well as helping to significantly speed up the referral process, handling patient data in the most appropriate way was my main priority.

‘We’ve worked with some of the country’s leading developers to ensure the highest standards of security that conform to GDC and CQC standards.

‘I want dentists to be able to focus on providing the best care and treatment for their patients, without worrying about breaching data protection or security guidelines.’

Referral management

Dental practices can use The Dentistry Cloud to send, receive and manage their referrals for free until January 2018.

Thereafter it costs just £25 per month with unlimited use of the portal for storage and management of all their referrals.
