An intercontinental challenge for charity

With only a month to go, the countdown to the 2014 Straumann Charity Bike Ride is underway with dental professionals from the industry training across the UK for a once in a lifetime challenge – a 500-mile intercontinental charity bike ride from Milan, Italy to the finishing line in Basel, Switzerland over the course of just five days.

Taking place from Tuesday 2 September to Saturday 6 September 2014, members of Straumann UK will join loyal customers to collectively unite for a charitable challenge by traveling through five European countries, which will present many challenging obstacles and conditions.

In an aim to raise funds for the Cleft Lip & Palate Association (CLAPA) and Bridge2aid, the challenging route will include one of the most iconic routes through the Stelvio Pass with a climb of more than 9,000 feet, one of the highest paved mountain passes in the Eastern Alps of Northern Italy.

Both charities work tirelessly to provide help and support to those in need. CLAPA provides support for all those with and affected by cleft lip and palate. It also runs confidence-building camps for children and distributes bottles and teats for babies born with the condition. Bridge2aid delivers dental care, education and training programmes in Tanzania, and runs a community development programme for those living on the streets of Mwanza.

Commenting on the impact of Straumann’s collective contribution last year, Louise Wheeler, community fundraising manager from CLAPA noted: ‘The amazing amount that team Straumann raised last year meant that CLAPA could continue to offer its full range of services, which include: supplying specialised feeding packs, developing support for children and adolescents in the form of residential weekends and a youth council, and running specialist services for parents and health professionals to help them offer the best care possible for children and babies affected by cleft. We wish them all the best with their challenge and can’t wait to hear all about how it goes! Good luck!’

Straumann is ultimately aiming to raise more than £24,000 for Bridge2aid and CLAPA. Donations can be made online via http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/straumann2014 and you can find out more about this year’s team on the dedicated Facebook page.
