5 Peri-implantitis – Treatment and Prevention

Presented by: Prof Eli Machtei  – Dexcel Pharma Ltd

Where?: Mini Lecture 2

When?: 1.00pm

With millions of new implants added annually, peri-implantitis is becoming an important oral disease with major health and financial implications.

Optimal treatment strategies for peri-implantitis are yet to be found. Renvert et al. in a systematic review have reported that non-surgical therapies are not effective in these lesions. Likewise Lindhe & Meyle on behalf of the European workshop on periodontology have concluded that non-surgical mechanical therapy causes the reduction of inflammation as evident in the decrease in BOP, however the overall improvement in clinical parameters is at best unpredictable.

To further improve treatment outcome, several adjunctive treatment modalities were employed. These included Er:YAG laser therapy, air abrasive devices and local delivery of antibiotics – with little further improvement.

Recently, we have completed a double blind randomised multi-centre clinical trial and were able to show that bi-weekly application of chlorhexidine chips (Periochip) had a profound effect on PPD reduction and CAL gain; these results were similar to that reported in for surgical therapies of peri-implantitis.

Professor Eli E Machtei is the director of the School of Graduate Dentistry at the Rambam health care campus and the chairman of the department of Periodontology. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Technion – Israeli Institute of Technology, faculty of medicine in Haifa, Israel.
