Posters remind DCPs of CPD hours

A poster campaign, aimed at reminding dental care professionals (DCPs) of their commitment to continuing professional development (CPD), has been launched by dental regulators.

There are less than eight months to go until nearly 40,000 DCPs reach the end of their first five-year CPD cycle – and so far, only 37% have logged more than the minimal number of hours.

Next summer (31 July), DCPs must have completed 150 hours of CPD but 11% have yet to log any.

The worst culprits are dental technicians with 22% not having logged.

DCPs will then have until 28 August 2013 to declare the hours that they have completed or risk losing their registration.

Now, the GDC is calling on bosses to remind DCPs of their commitments.

To highlight the deadline, the GDC has produced some posters for use in practices, and surgeries, etc.

They can be downloaded from the GDC’s website at www.gdc-uk.org.

So far:

• 14,586 (37%) DCPs have logged more than the minimum hours (including 50 verifiable)

• 4,425 (11%) DCPs have logged no hours

• 22% of dental technicians have logged no hours*

As part of the GDC’s on-going review of its CPD requirements a consultation is currently running asking for views on the proposals to update the mandatory CPD scheme.

Anyone wishing to take part should visit www.gdc-uk.org/haveyoursay

The public consultation proposals include:

• Developing learning outcomes for CPD linked to the GDC standards;

• Annual mandatory CPD declarations;

• Embedding personal development planning into the scheme;

• New minimum CPD hours requirement.
