Dental over-regulation a shared fear in Singapore

Singapore minister of health, Gan Kim Yong, met with staff of the Medical Protection Society and DPL at the end of July to discuss issues of mutual interest such as support and regulation of health professionals in the UK and Singapore.

The chief executive of MPS, Simon Kayll, medical director, Dr Priya Singh and Dr Jane Merivale in her role as deputy dental lead advisor in Singapore, were delighted to meet with the minister of health and his delegation, who were visiting key health stakeholders in the UK.

Gan Kim Yong was accompanied by his team from the ministry of Health, including the deputy secretary and the CEO of Changi General Hospital.

The visit was part of a wider UK study tour.
Dr Jane Merivale said: 'We were very pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Mr Gan Kim Yong and his colleagues. We had a valuable discussion on issues relevant in the UK and Singapore, such as supporting health professionals to achieve best practice in patient care, while avoiding over-regulation.'

During the visit, Mr Kayll, Dr Singh and Dr Merivale shared how MPS and DPL provides doctors and dentists with advice on legal and ethical problems that arise from their professional practice, as well as educational and risk management resources.

Dr Merivale added: 'It was a very fruitful meeting and we look forward to future contact with the Minister and members of the delegation.'
