Dentistry Top 50 – the results

This year the Dentistry Top 50 poll was again inundated with a record number of votes from readers of Dentistry magazine and Dentistry.co.uk. Here are the results of who you thought were the top 50 influential people in UK dentistry…

Congratulations to well-known cosmetic dentist James Goolnik who has made it two in row!

Founder of the Bow Lane Dental Group and author of the best-selling book ‘Brush’, the profits of which go to dental charity Dentaid, James has once again been crowned top influential dentist of 2012. He is the immediate past-president of the BACD and a member of the AACD. James qualified in 1992 from King’s College London.

He has worked exclusively in the City since 1995. He took two years off to gain a masters degree in Conservative dentistry at the world-renowned Eastman Dental Institute. He is on the board of the British Dental Bleaching Society and trains hygienists and therapists in tooth whitening, both theory and hands-on, through his company Smiles by James.

James also lectures internationally on subjects such as tooth whitening techniques, minimally invasive dentistry and marketing. His efforts at boosting the profile of the BACD have gone hand-in-hand with him being recognised as one of the top cosmetic dentists in the country, writing for publications such as Maxim and being interviewed on many television and radio programmes.

Last year, James launched the campaign ‘Heart Your Smile’, an inspirational campaign to increase positivity in the UK dentistry.

Well done James for being voted number one again! He will be speaking at Dentistry LIVE.

A former three-time winner of this poll, Kevin Lewis is still in the top 10.

A popular name in the industry, his writing – in particular his long-running columns in Dentistry magazine commenting on issues affecting the dental profession – are read by many practitioners.
Kevin qualified from The London Hospital in 1971.

During 30 years in general practice (the last 10 on a part-time basis) he developed special interests in preventive dentistry and practice management. He became involved in the medico-legal field in 1989, joining the board of Dental Protection Limited, and became its dental director in 1998, a post he still holds.

He is a member of the executive committee and council of the Medical Protection Society, and was a member of GDC steering group on recertification and a former vice president of the British Association of Dental Therapists. He has lectured extensively all over the world, including at several FDI World Dental Congresses.

Kevin has written two textbooks on dental practice management and countless journalism articles.

From 1981-2006 he was the associate editor of Dental Practice, and is now a regular columnist for Dentistry magazine, where he has become renowned for his vibrant and witty prose, imparting his considered and well-respected insight into UK dentistry in his own inimitable style.

In recent years, he has been awarded Fellowships from the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in recognition of his sterling and long-running commitment to serving the dental profession. He will be speaking at Dentistry LIVE.
