Belfast company StreamOn has launched a video-based e-learning site for healthcare professionals, including dentists. Courses are available for download to the user’s PC from the website www.edcastmedical.com, with prices starting at £20 sterling.
The site will provide training from dental and medical professional bodies, commencing at the launch with content from the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London, the Northern Ireland Centre for Postgraduate Pharmaceutical Education and Training, and iPath, a Queen’s University spin-off company from the school of pathology.
In addition, discussions are already in place between StreamOn and other professional bodies and colleges at home and overseas for the development of further courses.
‘Each course addresses a training issue in depth using a range of learning tools, including video lectures with PowerPoint, video-based patient/practitioner scenarios, equipment and procedure video demonstrations, knowledge testing, supporting downloadable documentation, and discussion forums,’ explained Mark McCann of StreamOn.
‘Thanks to the benefits of broadband technology there is the added convenience to the professional of being able to update their knowledge and skills whenever and wherever they want,’ he added.
Agnes McKnight, director of Postgraduate General Practice Education, Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency, said: ‘The life of the modern GDP is very busy and their time is very precious, so it isn’t always possible to attend training meetings and courses. However EdCast Medical has the potential to ensure that the best possible patient care is delivered.’
