Dental implants – an update on the latest maintenance and monitoring guidelines in general practice

Aims and objectives:

  • To update on the best practice and guidelines for implant maintenance and monitoring
  • To explain how to avoid complications and supervised neglect with dental implants
  • To describe the diagnostic features of and the difference between peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.

Learning outcomes:

  • To understand and be able to use current guidelines for implant monitoring and maintenance
  • To recognise patients with risk factors for dental implants and how to avoid complications
  • To be able to recognise peri-implantitis early and understand how to manage it.

Speaker: Fadi Barrak

Dr Fadi Barrak is registered as a specialist in oral surgery and he is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is a senior lecturer and the course lead for the masters degree in clinical implant dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire where he is responsible for the development and delivery of the curriculum. He graduated in dentistry from Bristol University, followed by medicine from Imperial College, London. Being dually qualified, he is also a fellow of RCS England and an affiliate of the RCS Edinburgh, having attained the diploma in implant dentistry. Fadi has also completed training in applied occlusal principles by the international partnership for the study of occlusion which focused on full mouth rehabilitation. Dr Barrak has a combined experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery in both hospital and primary care settings since 1994 having held positions of honorary consultant at both West Middlesex and Ealing hospitals. He is also a mentor for the Association of Dental Implantology and the International Team for Implantology. He has been placing implants since 1998, constituting over 90% of his clinical work. Having always been interested in clinical education, he has had the privilege of mentoring numerous colleagues over the years who range from beginners to experienced surgeons. Dr Barrak has committed part of his time to primary research at UCLan and Imperial College London where he is finalising his PhD in relation to the role of biomaterials in peri implantitis.
