Christie & Co’s medical team will be undertaking a 25km Thames Walk Challenge to raise money for the Myotubular Trust.
The walk will take place on Tuesday 18 July and the route will start at Christie & Co’s London offices in Blackfriars, before finishing in Kew.
Christie & Co has been a supporter of the Myotubular Trust since its inception in 2006, when it was co-founded by Wendy Hughes, whose husband Simon works for Christie & Co.
Myotubular myopathy
Wendy and Simon’s son, Zak, has the condition, x-linked myotubular myopathy, a rare genetic muscle condition that affects mostly boys from birth and can cause profound muscle weakness, and can dangerously affect the muscles that control breathing and swallowing.
Even a simple cold is life threatening to babies born with it and 80% of children die before their first birthday, and only 1% will make it to 10 years old.
In its 11 years, the Myotubular Trust has lead the way in investing in research to find a treatment, or cure.
To date, over £1.8m has been raised by families living with this condition, and their extended networks of friends, families, and employers, enabling the trust to award 12 research grants.
Their very first such grant has even led to gene therapy clinical trials which are starting imminently – the very first clinical trial for myotubular myopathy – with further potential therapies currently being developed too.
There is still a long road to a cure and if you would like to support the Christie & Co medical team playing their part in bringing that day forward, please visit their fundraising page – https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/christie-and-co-medical?View+your+page=View+your+page.
