Helping you stay ahead of the ‘caries curve’

Helping you stay ahead of the ‘caries curve’

Guided enamel regeneration is made possible with Curodont Repair by vVARDIS Switzerland, a breakthrough caries treatment.

Caries is the most prevalent non-communicable disease worldwide (Petersen et al, 2005). One reason is that its early stages, which can be considered sub-clinical signs of the caries disease, are largely subjected to the ‘watch-and-wait’ approach (Shah et al, 2023). This approach risks caries progression, and in severe cases, serious health conditions (Mejàre et al, 1999; Liu et al, 2022).

Curodont Repair by vVARDIS Switzerland is a breakthrough treatment in this space as it uses the self-assembling peptide technology to address early caries through guided enamel regeneration. It employs an ‘intelligent’ peptide to create a biomimetic, three-dimensional scaffold within the sub-surface body of early carious lesions.

This then attracts calcium and phosphate ions from the saliva for de novo hydroxyapatite formation, mimicking the natural biomineralisation process (Kirkham et al, 2007). This technology is backed by research spanning over 25 years, more than 200 publications, and 10+ years of clinical use.

Caries treatment with one application

Curodont Repair is able to reach the depth of non-cavitated caries through capillarity, rather than acting superficially like fluoride varnishes or topical calcium-phosphate based remineralisation pastes (Oliveira et al, 2020; Singh et al, 2021; Schmidlin et al, 2016). It is a patented, fluoride-free formulation that can be applied by dentists, dental hygienists, or dental therapists.

In a majority of cases, a single application is seen to be enough to treat a lesion. The short in-office application procedure is non-invasive, pain-free, non-staining, does not require anaesthesia or a drill, and needs only basic isolation techniques. It can be used on all tooth surfaces, including interproximal, and in all patients, including children (Natchiyar et al, 2023).

The efficacy of Curodont Repair has repeatedly been proven in several studies, including randomised controlled clinical trials. It has shown a clinical success rate above 90% defined as arrest and regression of initial caries lesions through in-depth enamel regeneration and it has proven to be significantly superior compared to fluoride varnish alone (Bröseler et al, 2020; Doberdoli et al, 2020; Welk et al, 2020).

A recently published retrospective study conducted in Switzerland on over 200 adolescents compared pre-operative and follow-up bite-wing radiographs of initial proximal lesions treated with Curodont Repair and found a 93% success rate in real-life clinical settings (Godenzi et al, 2023).

Testimonial

Dr Taisbel Guzman Rodriguez, a recent adopter of Curodont Repair in her practice, says: ‘As a dental practitioner, I’ve always been committed to finding ways to make my patients’ experiences as comfortable and effective as possible.

‘When I first heard about Curodont Repair, I decided to learn as much as possible about the technology, which gave me the confidence to introduce it to my patients who fit the criteria of early-stage caries or visible white spot lesions due to plaque accumulation.

‘After incorporating into my workflow, it has transformed not only the way I treat patients but also the way patients feel about their dental visits. I have received an incredible amount of positive feedback from them as they appreciate the simplicity, the lack of pain, and the fact that they can preserve their natural teeth. For me, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the relief and satisfaction on their faces.

‘As a very recent adopter, I am excited to monitor the treated lesions’ improvement through the next follow-up visits. I truly believe that Curodont Repair is going to change the landscape of how we address early decay in this country. The beauty is in its simplicity of application, patient satisfaction and ultimately its clinical results.

‘Thus far, thousands of patients have been treated with the vVARDIS portfolio. The strong body of evidence for Curodont Repair is testimony to its effectiveness in non-invasive early caries management. This, along with high acceptance and compliance, makes it ideal for use in all patients for optimum oral health maintenance.’
